ROMANE
Ref.: FA548
Artistic Direction : ROMANE
Label : Frémeaux & Associés
Total duration of the pack : 56 minutes
Nbre. CD : 1
With this volume Romane pays tribute to the wealth of French song: picking up melodies from his childhood and popular songs by Piaf, Distel or Trenet, the guitarist also signs some of his finest compositions. Accompanied by Christophe Cravéro (some wonderful choruses on guitar and violin), Romane teams up again with fantastic rhythm partners Yayo and Fanto Reinhardt, and Pascal Berne on double bass, who have been alongside him since the “Acoustic Quartet” recording (cf. Vol.7 of the complete Romane, Frémeaux FA545). Elegant swing, an innate feel for melody and composition… they all come together to incarnate grace in making Romane a central figure in French swing jazz. His influence, in the same spirit as Django, continues its spread around the world… like excellent French cuisine! Augustin BONDOUX
Four years after “Elegance”, an album that sealed their friendship and musical entente, in 2004 Romane and Stochelo Rosenberg went back into the studios with a quartet to make this “Double jeu”. Recorded with Stéphane Huchard on drums and bassist Marc-Michel Le Bévillon, their album cast new foundations in the avant gardist trend that was part of gypsy swing, a genre that, at the time, was still inflexible over its traditions. Their new record was no longer “merely” a tribute to the music of Django: this was also a homage to his innovative spirit, and who to do that better than two “sacred monsters” of the genre named Romane and Stochelo Rosenberg? A must-have album for all guitar fans.

INTÉGRALE Romane volume 10

A few months before going into the studio, he told Joël Leibovitz and myself that for his next album, he wanted to return to the roots of his musical influences using an acoustic arrangement. We both thought he was thinking of reinterpreting Django Reinhardt with a set up like that of the Quintet of the “Hot Club de France”.
“Not at all! You’re way off…” he responded. “I’m talking about the music I grew up with, Piaf, Trénet, Aznavour, Distel… of course there was Django too, but that was a bit later. You have to listen to a lot of other things to really understand Django, simple things, that how I became who
I am today”. We asked him who he intended working with on the project… “I’d like to get back with Yayo, Fanto and Pascal (his partners for the album “Romane Acoustic Quartet” released in 2002) for their finesse and rhythmic strength… and Christophe Cravero a young violinist and
pianist I met and who has that “swing” I love”.
Before leaving, he added: “Wait for me to come up with some songs, I’ve got some interesting ideas. Is that ok with you?” We simply replied “why not” for fear that he’d change his mind…
We were delighted.

A. BONDOUX

As the publisher of the complete recordings of Django Reinhardt — the set is a work of reference with 40CDs and booklets totalling 760 pages — Frémeaux & Associés today counts as one of the premier independent producers of gypsy jazz. This genre, as erudite and technical as it is generous and approachable, demonstrates the cultural and musicological richness of the gypsy contribution to western culture. Romane is one of their most eminent representatives and his compositions have become genuine standards. Frémeaux & Associés celebrates the work of this guitarist in a collection covering his entire career as a recording-artist, available to the public as a “Complete Works” set with French Guitar as its tenth volume.
