Après la réussite d’« élégance » et de « double jeu », il aurait été dommage de ne pas présenter Romane et Stochelo en concert, car c’est en live, sans filet, que cette musique donne sa pleine mesure ; et là, non seulement on les entend (11 titres enregistrés le 8 octobre 2005 à l’opéra comédie de Montpellier) mais on les voit, grâce à un bonus DVD d’une heure trente qui se divise en 3 parties. Dans un documentaire de 52’ écrit et réalisé par Sophie Paviot, les deux guitaristes évoquent les circonstances qui les ont amenés à devenir musiciens, à se rencontrer (c’était lors du festival de Samois en 1989) et à jouer ensemble. Au fil d’une conversation détendue et souvent humoristique, ils parlent de leur découverte de Django et de la manière d’appréhender son univers, évoquent aussi leurs familles et leurs amis, le tout entrecoupé d’extraits musicaux (répétitions, concerts). Dans un petit film de 6’, les deux acolytes parlent de leurs guitares : Busato 1939 et Maurice Dupont pour Romane, Léo Eimers et Selmer 504 (Django a eu la 503 !) pour Stochelo, une guitare qu’il refusa de vendre à Eric Clapton qui lui en proposait pourtant une petite fortune. Enfin, 30’ captées lors de ce concert montpelliérain nous les montrent en action : six titres dont quatre ne doublonnent pas avec le CD, comme ce magnifique double jeu, qui figurait sur le disque du même nom.
Gypsy guitar masters ; le titre n’est pas usurpé car ces deux musiciens d’exception que sont Romane et Stochelo s’élèvent ici à des sommets esthétiques rarement atteints. Pourtant ce duo pouvait sembler a priori improbable tant on a affaire à deux styles et deux personnalités complètement différents. Stochelo, c’est l’école hollandaise de guitare qui conjugue virtuosité et élégance, transcendée par ce vibrato immédiatement reconnaissable ; Romane développe des chorus très pensés avec un parfum parisien venu de la chope des puces où il fit son apprentissage. Si cette rencontre fonctionne à merveille, c’est tout d’abord parce que tous deux ont beaucoup de respect pour la musique et font preuve d’une grande ouverture d’esprit ; c’est ensuite parce que leur amitié est réelle (leurs regards complices en disent longs sur leur bonheur de jouer ensemble); Ayant évacué tout esprit de compétition guitaristique, incroyables d’aisance et de décontraction, prenant le temps de s’écouter, ils donnent le meilleur d’eux-mêmes au contact l’un de l’autre.
Le fidèle Marc Michel Le Bévillon, souvent mis en valeur (Rythm futur, Anouman, Blues for Barney...) assure un tempo métronomique tout en souplesse et en lignes subtiles, et déroule le tapis à nos virtuoses qui rivalisent  de rigueur, de lyrisme et d’invention, sur des standards rebattus (All of me, After you’ve gone, Nuages, Manoir de mes rêves...) qu’ils arrivent encore à renouveler, chacun ricochant sur une idée, une amorce mélodique ou un accent rythmique. Des compositions originales de grande valeur (Pour parler ou For Wes de Romane par exemple ou last minute swing, Blues for Barney ou Double jeu de Stochelo), leur permettent aussi d’exister personnellement.
Dans le documentaire, Romane déclare à un moment donné : « On cherche à s’amuser avec ce que l’on sait faire; il y a toujours des surprises, c’est comme un jeu ». Qui pourrait en douter à l’écoute de cette captation ? Respect !

After successful studio albums like Elegance and Double jeu, it would have been a pity not to have a live recording of Romane and Stochelo in concert, because the risks and perils of a live situation (no safety net!) allow their music to come to full bloom… And here you can not only hear the pair playing eleven titles for an audience — on October 8, 2005 at the Opéra Comédie Theatre in Montpellier — but also see them, thanks to a 90’ bonus DVD in three parts: first, a 52’ documentary written and directed by Sophie Paviot, where the two guitarists recall the circumstances that led them to their careers in music, evoke their first meeting (at the Samois Festival in 1989) and their frequent appearances together, and in the course of an open, often humorous conversation, the pair also discuss their discovery of Django Reinhardt, their appreciation of his universe, and their rapports with family and friends, all of it illustrated musically with excerpts from rehearsals and concerts; then in a short 6’ film the two guitarists also talk about their instruments, a 1939 Busato and a Maurice Dupont for Romane, and a model by Léo Eimers and a Selmer 504 (Django had the 503!) for Stochelo, a guitar he refused to sell to Eric Clapton despite the latter’s offer of a small fortune… Finally, there’s a 30’ film of the Montpellier concert that provides the audio in this recording, and shows Romane and Stochelo in action: six titles in all, including four that are not featured on the audio CD, like their magnificent version of the Double jeu piece that lent its name to the record mentioned above.
Gypsy guitar masters; The title is deserved, because here Romane and Stochelo, both exceptional musicians, have raised their playing to aesthetic levels that artists only rarely achieve. Outwardly, however, they appear an improbable duo: two styles, and two personalities, that are completely different. Stochelo is an exponent of the Dutch school of guitar playing, in that he provides a combination of virtuosity and elegance transcended by a vibrato that listeners recognize instantly; Romane, on the other hand, is notable for the thoughtful construction of the choruses he elaborates with this particularly Parisian flavour that comes from the flea-market boutique where he served his apprenticeship. The pairing of the two musicians works marvellously, partly due to the respect they show for the music, but also because both guitarists are totally open-minded. And the friendship between them is real: the glances they exchange while playing are proof enough of the genuine pleasure they derive from being onstage together. There’s no thought of competition between these two either: both guitarists seem incredibly relaxed, and they show so much facility in taking their time to listen closely to each other, and so give their best when they play interactively.
Marc-Michel Le Bévillon, their loyal partner on bass (often featured here, notably in Rythme futur, Anouman, Blues for Barney...) provides the tempo of a metronome despite flexible, subtle lines that lay down a carpet for these two guitar virtuosos to rival each other in lyricism, rigour and invention. They play some well-known standards — All of me, After you’ve gone, Nuages, Manoir de mes rêves etc — that they somehow succeed in renewing yet again, with each partner flying off the other’s ideas in ricochet, whether it’s a melodic fragment or an emphasis in the rhythm. The album also features some (very) rich original compositions that allow each guitarist to stand out individually: Romane’s Pour parler or For Wes, for example, or again Stochelo’s Last minute swing, Blues for Narney and Double jeu.
At one point in the set’s documentary, Romane says, “We try to have fun with what we can do; this always has surprises, it’s like a game.” Listening to this “live” recording, could there be any doubt about that? They deserve our full respect.

Stochelo Rosenberg et Romane croisent les cordes pour la troisième fois sur disque et pour la première fois en live. Enregistré en 2005, cet album témoigne de toute la complicité et du plaisir musical que ces deux figures tutélaires du jazz manouche, au sommet, éprouvent à jouer ensemble. Ce coffret CD + DVD permet de retrouver un documentaire de 52’ de Sophie Paviot, agrémenté de bonus et anecdotes, et une vidéo de 30’ du concert. L’album indispensable à tous les amoureux du genre.

Éditeur de l’intégrale discographique de Django Reinhardt de référence (40 CD, 760 pages de livrets), Frémeaux & Associés est aujourd’hui l’un des premiers producteurs indépendants de jazz manouche. The strings of Stochelo Rosenberg and Romane were crossing paths for the third time here, but this is a live recording made in 2005, and it demonstrates the empathy that exists between two musicians playing at their peak. Available as a CD+DVD set, it also provides the opportunity to enjoy a 52’ documentary filmed by Sophie Paviot, together with bonus tracks and 'behind the scenes' details. The set also includes a 30' video of the concert, making this a must-have addition for every collector and fan of the genre.

As the publisher of the complete recordings of Django Reinhardt — the set is a work of reference with 40CDs and booklets totalling 760 pages — Frémeaux & Associés today counts as one of the premier independent producers of gypsy jazz. This genre, as erudite and technical as it is generous and approachable, demonstrates the cultural and musicological richness of the gypsy contribution to western culture. Romane is one of their most eminent representatives and his compositions have become genuine standards. Frémeaux & Associés celebrates the work of this guitarist in a collection covering his entire career as a recording-artist, available to the public as a “Complete Works” set with Gypsy Guitar Masters as its eleventh volume.
