Lorsque Louis et Claudine Panassié se préparaient à filmer « L’Aventure du Jazz », ils comptaient bien réaliser de belles images de grands jazzmen mais ils craignaient, n’étant pas des « spécialistes » en matière d’enregistrement, de ne pas réussir aussi bien les prises de son. Certes, ils avaient mis les meilleures chances de leur côté en faisant l’acquisition d’un magnétophone « professionnel » de première qualité, mais, devant filmer les musiciens au vol, là où ils se trouvaient, les conditions idéales pour un bon enregistrement n’étaient pas toujours réunies.
Or, il s’est trouvé qu’à peu d’exceptions près, la prise du son a été excellente, supérieure, même, à celle des enregistrements faits dans les studios les mieux équipés. C’est ce qui a donné à Louis et Claudine Panassié l’idée de grouper en disque de larges extraits de la bande sonore de « L’Aventure du Jazz ». La qualité de la musique étant elle-même exceptionnelle, nous avons là de superbes recueils d’interprétations par toute une pléiade de grands jazzmen.
La musique contenue dans ces deux recueils est à la fois d’une telle qualité et d’une telle variété qu’elle donnera, gageons-le, envie à tous les possesseurs de ces disques de voir (ou de revoir) le film, tout comme la vision de « L’Aventure du Jazz » incitera sans nul doute de nombreux amateurs à en conserver, avec ces deux disques, un beau souvenir sonore.

LES ORCHESTRES

Le groupement de BUDDY TATE, un des meilleurs orchestres actuels, fait, depuis des années, les beaux jours du Celebrity Club de Harlem. Buddy Tate, tous les connaisseurs le savent, est un des plus « swinguants » saxos ténor dans l’histoire du jazz.
Pour la circonstance, le grand batteur Cozy Cole a été incorporé dans l’orchestre. Ces interprétations ont été enregistrées en mai-juin 1970.
Le groupement de DICK VANCE a été formé au printemps 1969, pour accompagner une tournée en Afrique réunissant de nombreux danseurs, dont les remarquables « lindy hoppers » de Lou Parks. Louis et Claudine Panassié ont profité d’une répétition, avant le départ pour l’Afrique, pour filmer ces danseurs et enregistrer l’orchestre. Tin Roof Blues a été enregistré en dehors du numéro de danse. Par contre, Jumpin’ at the Woodside a été pris pendant que les danseurs répétaient, et l’on sent l’effet stimulant de la danse sur le jeu d’Eddie Barefield et des autres musiciens.
L’orchestre THE PANASSIÉ STOMPERS a été formé spécialement pour le film. Huit des meilleurs jazzmen présents à New York et ayant d’évidentes affinités de style ont été réunis dans un cabaret de la ville (en mai-juin 1970), et la formidable section rythmique, irrésistiblement enlevée par Jimmy Crawford (le célèbre ex-batteur de l’orchestre Jimmie Lunceford), swingue avec une telle intensité que les solistes donnent constamment le meilleur d’eux-mêmes.
LES SOLISTES
Les deux pianistes – enregistrés au printemps 1969 - qui apparaissent dans « L’Aventure du jazz », WILLIE SMITH « LE LION » et CLIFF JACKSON, sont ce qu’on appelle dans le jazz des pianistes « complets », se suffisant à eux-mêmes. En effet, tous deux ont vécu l’époque où un pianiste seul faisait danser toute une salle, sa main gauche fournissant le jeu de la section rythmique d’un orchestre, sa main droite celle de la section mélodique. Willie Smith « Le Lion » est, en outre, un compositeur réputé : les deux morceaux qu’il interprète dans « L’Aventure du Jazz », Relaxin’ au thème si mélodieux et Here comes the band, si bien conçu pour le swing, sont de lui.
MILT BUCKNER, également enregistré en 1969, est un des plus grands organistes que le jazz ait connu. Swingin’ in Biarritz met en valeur l’intensité de son swing tandis que l’interprétation de Tea for two, qui renouvelle complètement cette célèbre mélodie, est extraordinairement émouvante.
Trois des plus grands batteurs que le jazz ait connu apparaissent en soliste dans « L’Aventure du Jazz » : ZUTTY SINGLETON (l’ex-batteur de Louis Armstrong), qui représente le style Nouvelle-Orléans de batterie dans toute sa pureté ; COZY COLE, le type du batteur complet (et le drummer favori de nombreux jazzmen) ; et JO JONES (qui gagna la célébrité dans les rangs de Count Basie), un des batteurs les plus originaux, incisifs, inventifs (avec d’étonnantes pointes d’humour) dans toute l’histoire du jazz.
LES CHANTEURS
Qui ne sait, aujourd’hui, que les spirituals et les blues sont à l’origine du jazz ? Le spiritual est représenté, dans « L’Aventure du Jazz », par SISTER ROSETTA THARPE, qui est non seulement une des plus émouvantes chanteuses noires mais une guitariste unique en son genre (elle joue aussi du piano à ses heures, comme dans I shall not be moved).
Pour le blues, deux des plus célèbres chanteurs, l’un guitariste : JOHN LEE HOOKER ; l’autre pianiste : MEMPHIS SLIM. Ce dernier a eu l’idée de demander à Madeleine Gautier, spécialiste du blues, de traduire au fur et à mesure qu’il les chantait les paroles d’un de sses blues, Beer Drinking Woman (« La buveuse de bière »), un de ces blues aux paroles fort drôles comme on en rencontre quelquefois. C’est une véritable « première » dans le genre qu’offre « L’Aventure du Jazz ».
Ces morceaux de Rosetta Tharpe, Memphis Slim et John Lee Hooker ont été enregistrée au printemps 1969.

L’AVENTURE DU JAZZ, TRENTE ANS APRES (Laurent Verdeaux 2001)
Lorsque Hugues Panassié écrivit au début de 1971 les lignes qui précèdent, les héros du film étaient encore bien vivants. Voir bouger sur l’écran tous ces grands musiciens, les écouter dans les deux albums qui furent alors publiés, ne laissait pas penser à une sorte de crépuscule !
La suite fut pourtant cruelle, et rapidement : Louis Armstrong partit le premier et, lorsque la troisième et dernière campagne de tournage s’ouvrit en 1972, d’autres avaient déjà suivi. Récemment, Buddy Tate et John Lee Hooker ont en quelque sorte fermé la marche : il ne reste aujourd’hui pratiquement plus d’acteurs de « L’Aventure du Jazz ». Mais ni les images, ni la musique, n’en ont vieilli pour autant : le recul du temps n’a fait qu’en augmenter la densité, l’intensité de l’émotion.
Cheville ouvrière du film de son fils Louis, Hugues Panassié partit à son tour, à la fin de 1974, rejoindre tous les vieux amis qui lui avaient fait cadeau de leur apparition dans « L’Aventure du Jazz », don royal et maintenant irremplaçable témoignage… de même qu’il avait été le premier dans les années trente à révéler à l’Amérique tout un pan de sa propre culture, Hugues Panassié était ainsi également à l’origine du film que les Américains eux-mêmes n’ont jamais eu l’idée de faire en cent ans de jazz… comprenne qui pourra.
Le passage du vinyle au laser nous offrait, pour cette nouvelle édition d’extraits de la bande sonore du film, deux demi-heures supplémentaires. Nous nous sommes donc lancés dans la chasse aux inédits et avons replongés dans nos vieux souvenirs et la soixantaine de bandes magnétiques qui allaient avec.
Et des inédits, il y en avait ! D’abord provenant des tournages de 1972, postérieurs à la parution des albums de l’époque. Ensuite, résultant de choix cinématographiques, ce qui n’enlevait rien à leur valeur musicale. De quoi même éditer un troisième CD (qui sait ?) et même peut-être un quatrième…
Inédits ou non, nous sommes repartis des bandes originales. Vous connaissez peut-être le contenu des deux albums de 1971. Mais pas le reste ! Alors, en plus des morceaux ici réédités, à vous la première version du « chez Panassié » des Panassié Stompers, les Milt Buckner-Jo Jones de 1972, le drumming étonnant de Michael Silva ; à vous ce très émouvant Music on my Mind chanté par Willie « the Lion » Smith, les Stars of Faith se produisant dans leur propre paroisse, Charlie Shavers chantant le blues ; à vous aussi ces moments privilégiés passés chez Sister Rosetta Tharpe et que nous avons reconstitués en toute continuité.
A vous enfin cet étonnant document – que nous publions comme tel, même si, trahie par la technique, une équipe accablée dut alors se contenter d’une prise de son déficiente – donnant témoignage, même imparfait, de l’extraordinaire puissance d’un dimanche matin en l’église Saint-Luc, quelque part dans un faubourg perdu de Philadelphie.

Laurent Verdeaux a été happé très tôt par le jazz. Une passion qui lui vaudra d’écouter des milliers de disques, puis d’apprendre la trompette (aux Beaux-Arts) et de mener sa vie durant un double parcours d’architecte et de musicien.
Il n’a pas vingt ans lorsqu’il se lie d’amitié avec Hugues Panassié, dont il a lu les ouvrages et en qui il a reconnu beaucoup de sa propre perception et de son propre ressenti de la musique noire américaine. Cela l’amène à collaborer avec « Monsieur Jazz », puis avec son fils : à la fois portefaix et conseiller musical, il fait partie de l’équipe avec laquelle Louis Panassié, sorte de cinéaste-aventurier, réalise dans des conditions acrobatiques et souvent délirantes ce film devenu mythique qu’est « L’Aventure du Jazz » et fait enregistrer par de grands musiciens quelques microsillons mémorables. Laurent Verdeaux tirera de cette épopée, sous le titre Jazz-jazz*, un livre de souvenirs haut en couleurs.
Plus tard, il fondera son propre label, Jazz Odyssey Records, pour reprendre cette production, la numériser et la rééditer, la sauvant ainsi de l’oubli.
En 2017, Laurent Verdeaux confie la pérennisation de l’exploitation du catalogue phonographique de Jazz Odyssey Records au label Frémeaux & Associés.

When Louis and Claudine Panassié were preparing their “L’Aventure du Jazz” project, they had every intention of capturing great jazz players on film with beautiful images but, since they weren’t specialists in audio techniques, they had fears that in comparison the sound recorded for the film might leave something to be desired… They hedged their bets by acquiring a first-class “professional” tape-recorder, but they knew they were going to be shooting scenes wherever the musicians were playing, and so recording-conditions wouldn’t always be ideal.
As it happened, with rare exceptions the sound in the film turned out to be excellent overall, with the takes sounding better than some recordings made in the best-equipped studios… And that gave Louis and Claudine Panassié the idea of ensuring that substantial parts of the film soundtrack from “L’Aventure du Jazz” were released separately on record. The quality of the music itself was exceptional, and the result a superb collection of performances by a whole galaxy of great jazz musicians.
The music contained had so much quality, and at the same time so much diversity, that those people lucky enough to own the records were bound to want to see the film (or see it again!) — and vice versa, because seeing “L’Aventure du Jazz” on the silver screen would no doubt encourage many jazz fans to acquire the two discs as souvenirs of the sound heard in the cinema…

THE BANDS
The orchestra led by Buddy Tate was one of the best, and for years it had been a highlight of the famous Celebrity Club in Harlem, notably thanks to its leader, whose tenor sax was recognized by connoisseurs as one of the most swinging horns in jazz history. In addition, the great drummer Cozy Cole was one of the band’s recruits, and these performances were recorded in May-June 1970.
Dick Vance formed his band in the spring of 1969 to accompany numerous dancers on an African tour, among them Lou Parks’ remarkable “lindy hoppers”. Filmmakers Louis and Claudine Panassié took advantage of rehearsals before the band’s departure to film the dancers and record the orchestra. Tin Roof Blues was recorded alone without a dance routine, but Jumpin’ at the Woodside was taped while the dancers were rehearsing and you can feel the stimulating effect the dancers were having on the playing of Eddie Barefield and the other musicians.
The Panassié Stompers were formed especially for the film. The pick-up group contained eight of the best jazzmen in New York at the time, all with obvious affinities in their styles. They were brought together in a club in May-June 1970, and the irresistible Jimmy Crawford leads a wonderful rhythm section: the drummer was famous for his exploits behind Jimmie Lunceford and his orchestra. He swings with such intensity that the soloists consistently play at their best.
THE SOLOISTS
Recorded in spring 1969, the two pianists appearing in the film were Willie Smith, known as ‘The Lion’, and Cliff Jackson. They were what jazzmen call “complete piano players” — their presence alone was enough. Both men enjoyed a career in a period when a pianist alone was enough to bring a whole dancehall to its feet, with his left hand acting as the rhythm section and the right providing the whole of the melody. Willie Smith was also a renowned composer, as shown by the two pieces he plays in “L’Aventure du Jazz”, Relaxin’ and its incredible melody, and the theme Here comes the band, a synonym for swing.
As for Milt Buckner, also recorded in ‘69, he was one of the greatest organists jazz has ever known. Swingin’ in Biarritz shows his penchant for swing while his reading of Tea for Two, an extraordinarily emotional performance, puts this famous tune in an entirely new light.
Three of the greatest jazz drummers also take solos in the film: Zutty Singleton (Louis Armstrong’s former drummer) represented the pure New Orleans style of percussion; Cozy Cole was a complete musician and the favourite of numerous jazzmen; as for Jo Jones, he reached fame in the ranks of the Count Basie Orchestra as one of the most original drummers, incisive and inventive… and humorous.

THE VOCALISTS

Doesn’t everyone know today that spirituals and blues were the origins of jazz? Spirituals are represented in the film through Sister Rosetta Tharpe, who was not only one of the most moving black singers but a unique guitarist and, at times, also a pianist, as you can hear on I shall not be moved.
The blues pieces here are played by two of the most famous singers, one of them a guitarist, John Lee Hooker, and the other a pianist, Memphis Slim. The latter had the idea of asking Madeleine Gautier, a blues specialist, to translate the lyrics of one of his songs, Beer Drinking Woman, as he went along — La buveuse de bière (the title in French) is one of those pieces with great humour that is quite common in the genre. This is a genuine “first” to be found in “L’Aventure du Jazz”. All the pieces with Rosetta Tharpe, Memphis Slim and John Lee Hooker were recorded in spring 1969.

L’AVENTURE DU JAZZ, THIRTY YEARS LATER
When Hugues Panassié wrote the above lines in early 1971, the film’s heroes were still among the living: watching all those great musicians on a wide screen, and then listening to them on the two albums that were published, no-one would have thought that this was a twilight period!
The rest of the story was rather cruel, however: Louis Armstrong was the first to pass away, and when the third and last part of filming took place in 1972, some of the others had already followed him. More recently, Buddy Tate et John Lee Hooker have closed their doors (in a manner of speaking), and today almost none of the film’s original participants is still with us. But for all that, neither the visual side nor the music has aged: in retrospect, the time that has gone by since then has merely increased the density (and intensity) of the emotions raised by the film.
At the end of 1974, Hugues Panassié, the mainspring of the film by his son Louis, went looking for all the old friends who’d graciously accepted to take part in “L’Aventure du Jazz” — a royal gift, and it became irreplaceable testimony of a whole era. Hugues Panassié had been the first (in the Thirties) to reveal to Americans a whole chapter of their own history, and one might say that Hugues Panassié was also behind this film (even the Americans hadn’t thought of making this one in a whole century of jazz… it was beyond belief!)
For this new edition of excerpts from the film’s soundtrack, the technical change from vinyl to laser made two extra half-hours of music possible, and so we went on the hunt for material that hadn’t been released, delving into our memories (and the sixty-something magnetic tapes that accompanied them.) Unreleased material… well, that’s saying something! First, there were reels of film dating from 1972, i.e. after the release of the first record-albums, not to mention music that hadn’t been used in the film solely for reasons that had to do with the film itself, and not their musical value, which remained intact. There was enough of the latter to make a third CD possible and, who knows, perhaps even a fourth disc…
Whether the sound had been released or not, we went back to the original master tapes to produce this set. Maybe you are already familiar with the contents of those two records from 1971, but not the rest, so here, in addition to the pieces that are in fact reissues, you can find sounds that have never been heard before at all: the first version of the Panassié Stompers’ chez Panassié, for example; the Milt Buckner-Jo Jones sides from 1972; the astonishing drums of Michael Silva; the very moving Music on my Mind sung by Willie ‘The Lion’ Smith; the Stars of Faith performing in their own parish; Charlie Shavers singing the blues; and also some privileged moments in the company of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, here put together for continuity.
The result is an astonishing document – one that we publish as such, even if the equipment disappointed the technical crew and they had to make do with sound deficiencies – that bears witness, albeit imperfectly, to the astounding power of a Sunday morning at Saint Luke’s Church somewhere in the suburbs of Philadelphia.

Ce coffret regroupe des enregistrements issus du film historique « L’Aventure du jazz », réalisé par Louis Panassié de 1969 à 1972. Ce film, parmi les plus importants de l’histoire du jazz, avait engendré la publication de deux formidables 33 tours en 1972. En 2005, afin de faire revivre ce patrimoine musical, Laurent Verdeaux créa le label Jazz Odyssey Records et se lança dans la numérisation et la restauration de ces titres légendaires dont la prise de son était d’ailleurs exemplaire pour l’époque. Ce double album, en sus de proposer des beaux moments de vérités musicales, permet une plongée dans les années 1970 avec ceux qui faisaient vibrer le cœur du jazz et du blues originels par l’intermédiaire d’un aréopage d’artistes légendaires : de Milt Buckner à John Lee Hooker, de Willie « the Lion » Smith à Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

The film is one of the most important in jazz history, and it gave birth to two wonderful 12” LPs in 1972. Over thirty years later (2005), Laurent Verdeaux founded the jazz label Odyssey Records in order to preserve this music legacy, and he began restoring and digitizing these legendary titles — whose sound quality, it has to be said, was exemplary for the period. Apart from the beauty of these moments of truth in music, this double album also offers a golden opportunity to revisit the Seventies in the company of some of the figures whose music went straight to the heart of seminal jazz and blues, from Milt Buckner and John Lee Hooker to Willie ‘the Lion’ Smith and Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
