It’s no easy matter to take a fi rm hold on the universe of Fats Waller, one of the most influential pianists in jazz history and a man whose aura is a legend. But Marc Benham is no beginner. His fi rst record “Herbst”, FA 578, was made under the aegis of Martial Solal and the critics gave it unanimous praise, making Benham a new fi gure to be reckoned with in jazz piano. With an imprint between stride, modern jazz and classical piano, Benham stands out with fi re and refl exion, his piano twisting and turning to navigate through a variety of melodious, limpid phrases with an exceptional sense of harmony and superb technique. Prendre à pleine main l’univers de Fats Waller, pianiste à l’aura légendaire, l’un des plus influents de l’histoire du jazz, n’est pas une mince affaire. Mais Marc Benham n’en est pas à son premier essai. En effet, son premier disque “Herbst” (FA578), parrainé par Martial Solal et unanimement salué par la critique, avait fait du pianiste une nouvelle figure incontournable du piano-jazz. Entre stride, musique classique et jazz moderne, sa griffe est reconnaissable entre toutes ; car pianiste fougueux et cérébral, Marc Benham virevolte, décline un phrasé mélodieux et limpide avec un sens harmonique et une technique exceptionnels. Ouvreur du champ des possibles, Marc Benham voit le patrimoine comme un support de création inépuisable. Bien plus loin qu’un hommage, un disque de piano solo en suspension, où se brouillent les frontières de l’espace et du temps.
