ANTHOLOGIE

Cette anthologie regroupe les 3 premiers albums des Oignons, formation jazz imparable qui s’est donnée pour mission de rendre au style new orleans sa vigueur d’antan. Le but des Oignons n’est pas de faire du neuf avec du vieux, mais bien de souligner toute la puissance avant-gardiste de ce courant issu de la première ère du jazz. En plus de la qualité indéniable des arrangements et compositions proposés, le groupe a su imposer sa griffe : intégrer un danseur de claquettes à la section rythmique. En découle une énergie débordante et communicante. Cette rétrospective souligne combien, Julien Silvand, trompettiste et leader de l’ensemble, a réussi à inscrire la formation dans la digne lignée de ses éminents représentants hexagonaux : de Claude Luter, aux Haricots Rouges, en passant par Orphéon Célesta.

This anthology brings together the first three albums by the Oignons, an inescapable jazz group whose mission was to restore to its former glory every vigorous ounce of the New Orleans style: not by taking the old to make it something new, but by emphasizing all the avant-garde power that lies behind the main style of the first era in jazz. And the band puts its own inimitable signature to the compositions and arrangements here by adding a tap-dancer to the rhythm section: the result overflows with communicative energy. Toute première mouture, il y a 14 ans, déjà!...
L’époque à laquelle il faut oser. Oser écrire des arrangements différents de ce que nous écoutions avec attention au Petit Journal Saint-Michel, enregistrer des solos flirtant avec d’autres époques que le jazz traditionnel. Ouvrir les frontières stylistiques, afin de pouvoir s’exprimer naturellement, dans les solos, raccrochant les wagons entre nos différentes influences. Enregistrement «maison», par le sousaphoniste de l’époque. La bonne volonté de chacun.e fut de mise et, alliée à une fraîcheur de début d’orchestre, une belle réussite fut logiquement au rendez-vous.
Nous voulions simplement prolonger la joie musicale communicative héritée de nos aîné.e.s, tel.le.s que Certains L’Aiment Chaud, Irakli & Louis Ambassadors, Les Rois Du Fox-Trot, Sac A Pulses, Marc Laferrière, Claude Luter et tant d’autres, à notre manière, utilisant le matériau des premiers et premières artistes de jazz outre-atlantique.
Deuxième mouture du groupe. Les manettes de l’enregistrement sont confiées à quelqu’un d’extérieur. Les chiens sont lâchés, pour ma part, en tant qu’arrangeur et directeur artistique. J’assume l’originalité de mes choix. Mes collègues, dubitati.f.ve.s, me suivent quand même. Peut-être parce que mes propositions musicales leur plaisaient finalement un peu, beaucoup? Haha. Qui sait?
Ce répertoire est gravé au laser sur de fines galettes bien garnies: pleines à craquer, autant vous dire que sur certaines chaînes un peu tatillonnes, elles risquent de ne pas être lisibles!
Ce deuxième disque est lié à plusieurs événements personnels, comme le malheur d’une tartine à la confiture qui tombe au petit-déjeuner. Forcément du mauvais côté. Certaines personnes se reconnaîtront. Heureusement il y a prescription.
Troisième disque. La cadence d’un disque tous les deux ans est maintenue.
La graphiste et auteure du site Internet signe ce qui deviendra la base du leit-motiv visuel, en même temps que la création de la pochette de l’album. Le fond blanc est désormais institutionnel et le logo repérable au premier coup d’œil.
Après deux catalogues musicaux différents, je (dé)teste l’autodistribution. C’est dommage, car ce troisième album est d’après moi l’aboutissement des Oignons en quintet.
Les compositions sont plus essentielles, les arrangements fonctionnent encore mieux et le choix des reprises est plus «sage».
Le jazz traditionnel prend des airs d’opérette, les suggestions de chansons du saxophoniste font mouche et notre duo de chanteurs frivoles nous envoie au 7ème ciel...
Le plus grand merci va aux artistes qui composaient «Les Oignons», durant ces années-là. Un très grand merci va évidemment à Paule Thomas, toujours aussi emballée qu’au premier jour, par ce groupe au nom loufoque! Bravo les enregistreurs, les mixeurs et les masteriseurs. Merci aux catalogues Swingland et Black & Blue, pour avoir cru en nous dans les premières années. Merci à Frémeaux & Associés, pour le travail très appréciable nous reliant enfin. Appréciable et original, puisque commençant par la fin et remontant aux origines!

The very first version of the band, 14 years ago already...
The time to dare. Daring to create the different arrangements of what we listened to attentively at the Petit Journal Saint-Michel. Daring to record solos that flirted with more modern times than traditional jazz. Daring to push the stylistic boundaries. We were playing naturally and connecting all our different musical influences.
This was a home-made recording by the sousaphone player. Everyone’s goodwill and the starting band’s freshness logically resulted in a success with this first album.
We wanted to fill the world with the joy that we received from listening to our predecessors: Certains L’Aiment Chaud, Irakli & Louis Ambassadors, Les Rois Du Fox-Trot, Sac A Pulses, Marc Laferrière, Claude Luter and many others, on our way, inspired by the talent of the first North American jazz artists.
The second version of the band. The recording of this album was entrusted to an external source. I made bold choices as arranger and artistic director. My colleagues had doubts, but they followed me. Perhaps they finally appreciate my musical propositions, a little bit, a lot? Haha. Who knows?
This repertoire is laser recorded on very thin and full CDs: so full that some CD players may refuse to read them!
This second album is based on very personal events, like the misfortune of a toast with jam that falls on the floor at breakfast. On the wrong side. Some people will know that I’m thinking of them. It was fortunately a long time ago.
The third album. We maintain the rhythm of producing an album every two years.
The designer and author of the website creates what will become the basis of the visual leit-motiv, and also designs the cover of the album. The white background is now established and the logo is immediately identifiable.
After the experience with two different distribution companies, I (de)test self-distribution. It’s a pity, because I find that this third album is the culmination of Les Oignons as a quintet. The compositions are more essential, arrangements work even better and there is a fine choice of cover songs. Traditional jazz sounds like French ‘’opérette’’, the saxophone player’s suggestions for French songs are inspired and our light singing duo elevates us to the 7th heaven…
The greatest thanks goes to the artists that comprised «Les Oignons» since 2005.
A big thank you goes obviously to Paule Thomas; always as excited as the first day, by this group with the crazy name! A big applause to the recorders, mixers and audio-masterers. Thanks to the Swingland and Black & Blue catalogs, for having believed in us in the early years. Thank you Frémeaux & Associés, for the very valuable work that finally connects us. A pleasant and original work, since beginning with the end and ending with the origins!
