Si je devais me définir musicalement,
Je dirais que je me considère comme un pianiste de Jazz d’influence stride, New-Orleans, qui aurait « mal tourné ». Enfant, j’ai découvert cette musique au contact de mon père, saxophoniste de Dixieland et adorateur de Swing, mais à une époque où le Jazz-Fusion battait son plein. J’ai donc été initié dans la même période à James P. Johnson et à Chick Corea. Ce fût un choc de m’entendre dire que ces deux hommes étaient tous deux des jazzmen, tant je trouvais leurs musiques différentes.
Je me suis par la suite énormément intéressé à tous ces pianistes, ces musiciens qui constituaient le lien entre ces deux personnages, et j’ai pu constater que les harmonies que je trouvais extrêmement modernes dans les années 90 étaient déjà employées par Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington ou Martial Solal, depuis belle lurette. (Et je ne parle pas bien-sûr, de leur leur utilisation dans la musique classique, mais ceci ne m’est apparu que plus tardivement.)
Cela m’a en quelque sorte décomplexé esthétiquement, et j’ai décidé de creuser mon vocabulaire stride dans une direction moderne, d’abord au travers de l’étude du style de mes musiciens favoris, puis par l’écriture de compositions qui expriment mon propos, et aussi, depuis toujours, en jouant les standards de jazz, terrain de jeu idéal et propice aux aventures les plus saugrenues tout en se rattachant au fil d’une mélodie ou une suite d’accords connus.
J’ai donc voulu que ce disque soit un reflet fidèle de mon travail, entre thèmes populaires, compositions, et aussi improvisations libres, (Heures Perdues 1,2 et 3), et dont l’alliance me parle.

If I had to define myself musically I’d say I consider myself a New Orleans/stride-influenced piano-player who ‘turned bad»… When I was young I discovered that music thanks to my father, a Dixieland saxophonist who worshipped Swing… but during a period when jazz-fusion was the thing. So I was initiated at the same time into James P. Johnson and Chick Corea... It was quite a shock when I was told that they were both jazzmen, because I found their music to be very different.
I later took a lot of interest in all the pianists and musicians who formed a link with those two characters, and I could see that the harmonies I found extremely modern in the Nineties had already been used for ages by Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington or Martial Solal. (And of course, I’m not talking about their use in classical music; that was something I only understood much later).
It somehow removed my aesthetic complexes, and I decided to dig deeper into my stride vocabulary, taking a modern direction: first by studying the styles of my favourite musicians, and then writing my own compositions to express what I wanted to say; and also, always, by playing jazz standards, an ideal playground for getting into the strangest adventures while still keeping to the thread of a melody or a recognized series of chords.
I wanted this record to faithfully reflect my own work, with popular tunes, compositions and free improvisations (“Heures Perdues 1,2 & 3”) coming together in an alliance which really has meaning for me.
