Concerts naturels – Soundscapes

Provence, in the South of France, is a land of stark contrasts. Hard winters are followed by summers of heat and drought. This determines a particular fauna, with large numbers of insects and insectivores. The concert of this record tells the story of a day at the end of June, in a wild valley through which a stream flows, not far from Manosque. An abandoned hill farm is home to two pairs of lesser kestrels, a pair of little owls and a roller. In the dry fields, that constitute the dominant feature of the landscape, bee-eaters have colonised the banks of an old lane. Jackdaws, that have finished nesting, are already collecting for their erratic movements. The Scops owl has waited for the peak of the insect season before laying its eggs in the holm oak, just above the microphones. Breezes, raised by the heat, drive the cumulus clouds that form during the day but the storm does not break.
