Si Romane fait partie des héritiers de Django les plus convaincants, c’est parce qu’il ne s’est jamais enfermé dans la perpétuation, conjuguant son admiration pour l’illustre manouche avec d’autres courants musicaux, suivant sa propre voie faite d’ouvertures et de rencontres : on l’a vu aux côtés de personnalités musicales aussi différentes que Bob Brotzmann, Babik Reinhardt, Florin Niculescu, Roland Dyens, Angélo Debarre, Francis Varis, Ninine, Didier Lockwood, Tchavolo Schmitt…
Stochelo Rosenberg a grandi au sein d’une grande famille de musiciens manouches établie au sud de la Hollande. Autodidacte, il s’est initié à la guitare vers l’âge de dix ans, en s’inspirant des disques de Django, puis a acquis sa technique éblouissante par une pratique acharnée de l’instrument, jouant inlassablement un répertoire de «?standards?» du genre avec ses oncles (notamment Wasso Grünholtz) et cousins (Nousche et Nonnie, guitariste et contrebassiste de son trio depuis une quinzaine d’années) et autres voyageurs rencontrés notamment lors de conventions évangélistes. La carrière de Stochelo a véritablement démarrée après un passage remarqué au Festival Django Reinhardt de Samois-sur-Seine et l’enregistrement de son premier album «?Seresta?». Depuis, le trio Rosenberg (véritable vedette en Hollande) a enregistré de nombreux disques, dont un en 1993 au Carnegie Hall de New York à l’invitation de Stéphane Grappelli, et tourne en Europe, au Canada et au Japon insufflant une orientation latine à la tradition du swing manouche. En jouant récemment en big band ou en accompagnant le chanteur Herman Van Veen, Stochelo a brillamment démontré qu’il pouvait se confronter à de nouvelles expériences musicales.
Cet album est la concrétisation d’une admiration réciproque de longue date et d’une réelle amitié née lors du festival de Patrimonio, en Corse, rendez-vous incontournable de la fine fleur des cordes manouches.
On assiste à une véritable rencontre musicale et humaine : pas de vaine compétition mais une osmose musicale, un équilibre et un dialogue exceptionnels, remarquablement soutenue par la solide contrebasse de Gilles Naturel. Chacun s’accorde à l’autre avec un immense respect, un jeu tout en nuances, aux harmonies raffinées, en une libre respiration qui fait oublier leur époustouflante virtuosité pour laisser place à l’essentiel : le cœur, le sentiment, la générosité.
On reconnait Stochelo à la puissance et à la vigueur de l’attaque sur les cordes, à son énorme vibrato et à son phrasé fluide qui fait chanter les notes (le premier chorus de Just Enough for Jazz). Moins focalisé sur la rapidité d’exécution, Romane se distingue par son sens de la construction du chorus, la respiration et la musicalité de son phrasé et une richesse que l’on ne trouve pas forcément dans la tradition pure. Enfin, démarche indispensable pour sortir de l’in (dé) finie répétition inhérente au style, nos deux guitaristes signent ici quatre morceaux chacun qui témoignent d’une belle fraicheur d’inspiration, le très beau Promenade de Stochelo, le charme poétique à la Crolla de Pierre de Romane ou l’atmosphère délicate de Soir de Trottoir ou Dreams, autant de mélodies qui retrouvent un vrai sens populaire.
Romane et Stochelo alternent accompagnement (leur sens du swing et la mise en place sur After You’ve Gone et How High the Moon, les deux seules reprises de l’album) et chorus jamais en défaut d’inspiration, de swing ou d’élégance. Constamment à l’écoute l’un de l’autre, ils anticipent, soulignent, répondent comme s’ils jouaient ensemble depuis toujours, combinant à ce point style et grâce qu’on croirait cette musique naturelle et jouée sans effort. Bref, ces deux là, ne pouvaient que se rencontrer.

Romane is one of Django’s most persuasive heirs because he has never limited himself to simple perpetuation, but has combined his admiration for the great Gypsy with other musical schools, following his own path and remaining open to new horizons and partnerships. He has appeared with such different musical personalities as Bob Brotzmann, Babik Reinhardt, Florin Niculescu, Roland Dyens, Angélo Debarre, Francis Varis, Ninine, Didier Lockwood and Tchavolo Schmitt.
Stochelo Rosenberg grew up in a great family of Gypsy musicians settled in the South of Holland and is completely self-taught. He first learnt the guitar around the age of ten by copying Django’s records, then acquired his dazzling technique through relentless practice, tirelessly playing a selection of the genre’s “standards” with his uncles (especially Wasso Grünholtz), cousins (Nousche and Nonnie, guitarist and double bass player in his trio for the last fifteen years) and other travelers met mainly at evangelical conventions. Stochelo’s career really took off after his acclaimed performance at the Django Reinhardt’s festival in Samois-sur-Seine and the recording of his first album, “Seresta”. Since then, the trio Rosenberg (who are stars in Holland) have made quite a number of records, including a 1993 live at New York’s Carnegie Hall where they were guest of Stéphane Grappelli. They have also toured all over Europe and in Canada and Japan, bringing a Latin taste to the Gypsy Swing tradition. Having recently played in a big band accompanied the singer Herman Van Veen, Stochelo has brilliantly demonstrated his ability to take on a new musical experiences.
This album is a result of their long-lasting mutual admiration and genuine friendship, dating from the Patrimonio Festival in Corsica, an essential event for the cream of Gypsy musicians.
Theirs is a genuine and human encounter: no pointless competition, but musical osmosis, exceptional balance and dialogue remarkably underpinned by firm double bass from the faithful Gilles Naturel. Each player show the greatest respect for the other with amazingly subtle playing, refined harmonies and free breathing that make us forget their breathtaking virtuosity and focus on the crucial part: heart, feeling and generosity.
Stochelo is recognizable in the power and energy of this string technique, his huge vibrato and fluid phrasing as he makes the notes sing (listen to the first solo in Just Enough for Jazz). Less focused on speed of playing, Romane stands out for his sense of solo construction, the breathing and musicality of his phrasing and a harmonic richness that is not necessarily to be found in the purely traditional style. Finally, using an approach that is crucial in allowing them to escape the in(de)finite repetition inherent in the genre, our two guitarists each provide four pieces that display brilliantly fresh inspiration (listen to Stochelo’s wonderful La promenade [The walk], the Crollaesque poetic charm of Romane’s Pierre and the delicate ambience of Soir de Trottoir [Pavement Evening] and Dreams, all melodies that recapture a true popular meaning).
Romane and Stochelo switch between accompaniment (listen to their sense of swing and construction on After You’ve Gone and How High is the Moon?, the only two covers on the album) and solo playing, never wanting for inspiration, swing or elegance. Always attentive to each other, they anticipate, underline and respond as if they had always played together, combining so much style and grace that their music seems natural and effortlessly played.
