ROMANE & STOCHELO ROSENBERG
Four years after “Elegance”, an album that sealed their friendship and musical entente, in 2004 Romane and Stochelo Rosenberg went back into the studios with a quartet to make this “Double jeu”. Recorded with Stéphane Huchard on drums and bassist Marc-Michel Le Bévillon, their album cast new foundations in the avant-gardist trend that was part of gypsy swing, a genre that, at the time, was still inflexible over its traditions. Their new record was no longer “merely” a tribute to the music of Django: this was also a homage to his innovative spirit, and who to do that better than two “sacred monsters” of the genre named Romane and Stochelo Rosenberg? A must-have album for all guitar fans. Augustin BONDOUX
As the publisher of the complete recordings of Django Reinhardt — the set is a work of reference with 40CDs and booklets totalling 760 pages — Frémeaux & Associés today counts as one of the premier independent producers of gypsy jazz. This genre, as erudite and technical as it is generous and approachable, demonstrates the cultural and musicological richness of the gypsy contribution to western culture. Romane is one of their most eminent representatives and his compositions have become genuine standards. Frémeaux & Associés celebrates the work of this guitarist in a collection covering his entire career as a recording-artist, available to the public as a “Complete Works” set with Double Jeu as its ninth volume.

Romane & Stochelo Rosenberg
Double jeu
Four years after the aptly titled “Elegance” album that met with such deserved success, there was a new meeting (on record, in any case) between Romane and Stochelo Rosenberg, two of the finest guitar heroes in gypsy jazz. Gilles Naturel was no longer the bass player; replacing him was Marc-Michel Le Bévillon, another of Romane’s regular accomplices. And, given the guitarist’s taste for things he hadn’t done before, he chose drummer Stéphane Huchard to form a rhythm section that was more “jazz” without denying himself the opportunity to playing grooves that had funk and soul accents…
And so, in turning the page on that typical “pump” sound — one of the most significant elements of gypsy swing — the “Double jeu” album saw the two guitarists taking more and more liberties with the codes of Django Reinhardt. The pair had always shown more loyalty to the famous gypsy than most of his heirs, and the new record, while no “gypsy” album per se, still carried that unmistakeable “touch”.
Discovering that neither the drummer nor the bassist had ever seen Stochelo before they went into the studio leaves you speechless when you hear the perfect entente between them here. The sound is excellent, and you can hear the rhythm section stretching out (especially in the remarkable solo played by Stéphane Huchard on Blue Rondo à la Turk) with an impressive feel for the music’s pulse. Each guitarist contributed to the repertoire here, and everything was done in situ, with tunes that are frankly jazz — Stochelo’s explicit Blues for Barney (the great American guitarist had just passed away), All jazzy (a feature for Le Bévillon on bass) or the boppish Strange eyes, and Romane’s very modern Bop tension or Accent groove — alternating with titles that vary immensely in atmosphere: Double jeu, an exceptional swing-waltz by Stochelo (a regular feature in his concerts), where the guitars put down twirling overlays of melody lines, or the poignant Melody for Babik, Romane’s tribute to a lost friend. Also worth noting are their highly original new readings of Nature Boy, with sensitivity that skims over the strings, and the unexpected Blue Rondo à la Turk.
Accomplices in and outside of music, the two guitarists turned their new encounter into a genuine festival for strings. Accompanying each other with remarkable drive — great soloists are generally very good accompanists due to their feel for rhythm, harmony and chords — their relays between solos show the care they take over melody, subtlety and power of expression, as in Romane’s remarkable chorus on Bop tension, where he conjugates verve, intelligence and passion.
As Stéphane Carini aptly wrote in “Jazzman” when this record was first published in 2004, Romane and Stochelo “pick out every pearl of inventiveness and precision, causing the explosion of the very terms of reference we’re tempted to use for them.” Close your eyes and open your ears!
