CROONER’S DREAM
Claude Bolling
Guy Marchand
Claude Bolling, the first French musician to be awarded with a gold record in the USA and to be nominated on several occasions for the Grammy awards for his instrumental compositions, is responsible for the existence of a big band and regularly performs throughout the world. This is one of the reasons why the Bolling Big Band is so united and boasts such colored sound. Claude Bolling, a disciple and friend of Duke Ellington, assimilated the lessons of his master, resulting in the exquisite roundness and melodic exactitude of his compositions, making them so successful.‘Let a souvenir disc spoil our evenings’, was Guy Marchand’s deliberately brash comment regarding this recording.‘As far as I’m concerned, a Crooner is the whitefaced clown, the one who doesn’t make us laugh...He’s the loser, the unhappy fellow, the abandoned one, the man who sings of things which may seem very simple but which are in fact very complicated. A Crooner is the guy who gets up on stage and with his very pleasant voice, says to the punters : Well ... my wife has left me, I’m coming up to fifty, I haven’t got a dime and yet I’m going to sing you a love song ...’
