JAZZ ET MUSIQUES DE FILM 1953-1962
MICHEL LEGRAND
Ref.: FA5769
Artistic Direction : OLIVIER JULIEN
Label : Frémeaux & Associés
JAZZ ET MUSIQUES DE FILM 1953-1962
Michel Legrand was one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. After showing great promise as a jazz arranger — working notably with Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Bill Evans — he turned his hand to the French “chanson” genre and composed for Boris Vian and Henri Salvador, Jacques Brel or Maurice Chevalier. He then became probably the most famous composer of melodies for France’s Nouvelle Vague filmmakers — Agnès Varda, Jacques Demy, Jean-Luc Godard —, but it was only the beginning, for he went on to be one of the most illustrious film composers in the world. This 10CD set contains his works during that first great period, devoted to all the music released under his name. Patrick FRÉMEAUX

JAZZ ET MUSIQUES DE FILMS 1956-1962
LE MONDE INSTRUMENTAL MICHEL LEGRAND
ENGLISH SUMMARY
Michel Legrand practised his art as a musician and composer over seven decades, from the Fifties until the years beginning in 2010. He was particularly well-known as a composer of music for films, and over his long career he was associated with numerous great musicians in many different genres.
He was born in Paris in 1932. Both his parents were musicians, and he discovered music at an early age before he went to work in Ray Ventura’s music-publishing company. During the Second World War, despite the Occupation, he studied piano from 1942 to 1949 and turned to jazz. He wrote his first arrangements for his uncle, and in 1948 he first heard Charlie Parker play at a concert. And then came Stan Kenton, Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald and others… He would write arrangements notably for Dizzy Gillespie, but he also began working with some of the great names in French popular music, among them Henri Salvador, Catherine Sauvage, Jacques Brel and Maurice Chevalier.
He was only 22 years old when in 1954, his album “I Love Paris” became an international best-seller, racking up sales of 8 million copies that made Michel Legrand a great name in jazz, not only across Europe but also in The United States. A few years later, it was in America that he recorded the album Legrand jazz, alongside the likes of Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Bill Evans.
There was a revolution in the French film world in the Sixties, and Michel Legrand found himself riding this new wave that swept through cinemas. He had already written music for films but now he turned his attentions entirely to original soundtracks. He made numerous films in association with the directors Agnes Varda, Jean-Luc Godard and Jacques Demy, notably composing the score for the film-musical The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg. But France couldn’t hold him and in 1966 he settled in Los Angeles to try his luck in American film studios where, with the help of Quincy Jones and Henry Mancini, Legrand began working on his first movies for Hollywood.
Only two years later he found stardom: in 1968 the film The Thomas Crown Affair received the Oscar for the Best Original Song. And then in 1970 Michel Legrand received yet another Academy Award, this time recognising his original soundtrack for the film Summer of ’42.
Before he passed away in the year 2019, Michel Legrand’s filmography numbered over 200 compositions featured in French and American productions.
