The six movements of the Suite incorporate a trio of piano, drums and bass into a classically sized orchestra. Here, more than ever, Bolling successfully combines his two loves?: He entwines, unites, separates and brings together again jazz and classical elements in a work that is constantly refreshing, uncommonly vivid. In the Suite, Bolling entlarges and magnifies the kind of musical dialogues that he began in his previous Suites with flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal and guitarist Alexandre Lagoya?; he also includes a touch of the impetuosity of Earl “Fatha” Hines and the clear simplicity of Duke Ellington – keyboard and jazz masters whom he has always admired. Suite for Chamber Orchestra and Jazz Piano Trio is another original work from a modern music legend. Like Claude Bolling himself, it is full of vigor and originality?!

Claude BOLLING

In his native France, Claude Bolling is closely linked with jazz?: He conducted his first jazz band at the age of 16 and participated extensively in the jazz scene of Saint-Germain-des-prés during the post-World War II years. Bolling’s love for jazz has never diminished, even though, as pianist and band leader, his work has expended over ther years to include original pop and classical compositions. Today, Bolling is among the best-known French musicians in the world, with recordings that regularly rank at the top of the charts and with a gold record in 1981 for his Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano with Jean-Pierre Rampal. In his various Suites written for one or two soloists, Claude Bolling has shown a continuous and enlarging sense of the relationship between jazz and classical performance. Here, in the new Suite for Chamber Orchestra and Jazz Piano Trio, he brings his concepts to even richer fulfillment.

Jean-Pierre Rampal (1922 - 2000)

Jean-Pierre Rampal is unanimously recognized as one of the greatest flutists in the world and is noted for his interpretations of works ranging from Baroque to modern. During the past few years, Rampal has turned with increasing frequency to conducting and has led many symphony orchestras, including those of Los Angeles, San Francisco, New Orleans, Montreal as well as the Nippon Symphony of Japan. Like his compatriot Claude Bolling, Rampal has always been passionate about jazz, and collaboration with Bolling in the past has produced the immensely successfull Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano. When Bolling’s Suite for Chamber Orchestra and Jazz Piano Trio was schedule to be recorded, what more obvious choice for conductor could there have been than Jean-Pierre Rampal ?
