NEW STORIES
To invent new stories and share them… The birth of this trio took place at the crossroads between the lives and experiences of the three artists. Apart from the friendship they shared, and the admiration they already had for each other, the very existence of this trio seemed to be an unavoidable encounter, a confrontation that they’d all been hoping for. Taking a strong, common vision of jazz and improvisation as their starting point, they off er music that is resolutely modern and uncompromising. It makes them an exceptional trio, and here they invite listeners to follow them through these «New Stories», all of them subtle chapters in a book that shows their commitment.

In their prime, they have put their voluminous skeins of wool back on the loom, but what were they trying to do, even if you do suppose they know what they’re about? The listener proposes hypotheses that leap into the ears: the pleasure of playing, of allowing their instruments have a conversation, of risking side-steps, the intoxication of transgression. There’s also a serious amount of fun to be had. But isn’t this a road-map that others have already riddled with their own exploits? Indeed it is. So one has to look elsewhere to find the reason for the magnetic force that these short stories produce in our minds, tales whose adventures are related here by three jazzmen (one should make this clear just in case...), even when some of their plots are ones we already know, like Black Narcissus or Bohemia After Dark.
The strength of their commitment undoubtedly provides an explanation: the way Jean-Paul Celea attacks a note, his sustain like a stretching of the soul, and that precision with a bow that is quite out of reach for the common mortal, are all signs of a musician entirely devoted to his art. It’s that same commitment which gives Daniel Humair total freedom to release the beat, to subdivide wherever he chooses, to liberate the notion of time while applying to his canvas those colours that “come straight from the tube”, to use the language of painters. And as for Hervé Sellin – hiding his erudition almost too well, concentrating his energy on rebalancing – he distributes the glittering residue of his notes around a shared intent. The words rigour, and sense of form (without which an enterprise like theirs would not know how far not to go too far) constitute the invisible frame of this music. The decisive assist often comes from him.
Between the stimulation of a fierce walking bass that sweeps everything aside in passing, oblique embellishments whose humour recalls the facetiousness of a Martial Solal, poetic rubato phrases, little skylights through which virtuoso flashes appear, instants that are “just right” amidst a maelstrom of timbres and notes, and unisons where the ear bows to the artisan’s skill, we have to stop the chronometer.
For just the time it takes to realise that we are present at the hatching of a great record and, by that very fact, a great trio has come to bloom.
François Lacharme
To describe a piece of music is such a futile task, and so here we have something that will spare our vocabulary. As their music unfolds bar by bar, this trio reveals almost surreptitiously what modernity is: the sum of what has preceded it, and an appeal to boldly erase a debt by assuming the unknown. Between them, Hervé Sellin, Jean-Paul Celea and Daniel Humair have accumulated a long history: the accompanist’s craft, no little experience of both classical and contemporary music, intrepid undertakings, teaching at the highest levels, services rendered to other soloists, projects either as leaders or with a collective, and also prominence that rises and falls...
