Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos was one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, and his music was often written in a style that was a mix of European influences (Bach in particular), and traditional Brazilian music, especially the choro. This exceptional recording made in Rio de Janeiro in 1897 was produced by Joël Leibovitz, and the three CDs here contain the 9 complete suites of the Bachianas Brasileiras performed by the Orquesta Sinfónica Brasileira.

A master of the Brazilian guitar, not to mention the greatest guitarist of the 20th century in the whole of South America... This solo recital by Baden Powell was recorded in Belgium at the 1987 International Guitar Festival that took place in Liège, where Powell took his listeners beyond the frontiers of bossa nova and into the realms of jazz, classical music and the best of MPB, the name of popular music in Brazil. The result is nothing less than a rare artistic accomplishment that combines feverishness music with tranquillity. Frémeaux & Associés, who published the master’s previous two albums, have joined forces with Guy Lukowski, the city of Liège and producers Baden Powell Produções Artisticas to make this extraordinary recording available to all. At the peak of his artistry, the guitarist shows a sparkling virtuosity that is totally subjugating.

Her country of adoption is Brazil, and the immense jazz singer Manu Le Prince here pays homage to composer Johnny Alf, considered by some as the father of bossa nova and a major influence on Jobim and Gilberto. Manu has already dedicated recordings to the songs of jazz monuments like Cole Porter and Wayne Shorter; for this record she chose the unavoidable (and unfairly overlooked) songwriter Johnny Alf. She recorded and produced this tribute in 2013 in Rio, accompanied notably by Idriss Boudrioua, Alf’s saxophonist and arranger for three decades, and some of Brazil’s greatest musicians. Her suave, jazzy voice puts all her energy into the repertoire of the composer from Rio to finally do justice to his fundamental music.

We Brazilians are not very good at defending our own cultural heritage. So it makes me very happy to see artists from other countries interested by our music and recording works that are little known even to Brazilians. Noel Rosa fathered popular urban songs. Dorival Caymmi breathed Afro-Brazilian magic into them, and Vinicius de Moraes was the poet par excellence of bossa nova. This collection also celebrates other in uential artists in Brazil, the likes of Catulo da Paixão Cearense, Cândido das Neves, Orestes Barbosa, Cartola, Ronaldo Bôscoli and Humberto Teixeira. Whether they were black, white or mulatto, from Rio de Janeiro or Nordeste, composer songwriters or lyricists, each of these artists contributed to the stylistic evolution of popular Brazilian songs for half a century. Their literary talents made their verse a thing of extraordinary poetry.
