A mythical and sulphurous text for generations of readers, the Satiricon offers a unique insight into the working classes of ancient southern Italy. The narrator, a libertine student named Encolpe, living in a sort of ménage à trois with his companion Ascylte and their young lover Giton, invites us to follow him in an uninterrupted succession of extravagant adventures. Alongside him, we meet a host of colourful, grotesque and debauched characters, always on the lookout for a bargain, a petty theft or, failing that, a game of finesse.
The listener may be surprised to hear a number of discussions that could take place at a contemporary family dinner: criticism of politicians, lament about purchasing power, slander against the disappeared. These exchanges take place in a flowery and varied language, reflecting the language levels and dialects of the different guests.
Olivier Sers' translation, read by Jean-Pierre Lorit, masterfully captures these linguistic particularities and the truculence of the exchanges. 3 CD audiobook, in French.
