C’EST LE MADISON !

Passée l’inspiration swing/zazou d’après-guerre, puis cha-cha, mambo ou calypso, voire rive gauche, le monde musical pré-rock’n’roll est surtout imprimé par des personnalités, qui peuvent marquer fortement leur époque, mais à titre individuel. La survenance du rock’n’roll aux Etats-Unis en 1954/55 crée un phénomène de vague, de courant, de fratrie musicale. Après le rock (sans le suffixe ‘n’roll) qui s’installe en France en 1960-61, arrive de concert le twist fin 1961, plus directement lié à la danse. Alors que le rock avait mis un certain temps à s’installer, l’impact quasi immédiat du twist crée un précédent, et donne des idées.
Et, à l’été 1962, c’est le madison. Cette danse américaine remonte déjà au printemps 1960, lancée par le Ray Brian Combo avec The Madison Time. Un rythme plus lent que le twist, un soupçon de jazz, la présence de piano ou orgue marquent ce pas où il s’agit d’effectuer un M, de préférence en groupe. Le madison est déjà répandu dans certaines boîtes de France depuis le début 1962, mais il n’a pas encore de vraie notoriété et d’interprète français.
C’est la firme Odéon qui avec Billy Bridge, pour son deuxième super 45 tours en juin 1962, va lancer son propagateur, son leader maximo, son grand timonier. Jusqu’à être surnommé le Prince du madison. Contrairement à ce qu’induirait cette démarche opportuniste, les disques de Billy Bridge (1945-1994) – avant, pendant et après madison – sont d’une excellente tenue musicale, avec des plans de guitare de rock noir dus au musicien vétéran américain Mickey Baker, exilé depuis peu en France, aidé des plus fines lames du jazz français.
Aussitôt, comme pour le rock’n’roll 50, le rock 60 et le twist, beaucoup s’y mettent. Que ce soient les apparentés (Johnny Hallyday, Sylvie Vartan, Pirates, Loups Garous…), les fantaisistes (Henri Salvador, Henri Genès…), les orchestres multi-directionnels (Olivier Despax, Claude Bolling, Claude Vasori, Georges Jouvin, Roby Davis, Christian Chevallier, Teddy Martin, Ambassadors…) et même des baptisés ad hoc (les Madison’s, Harry Madison). Mais, contrairement au twist, le madison ne sera pas universel, certains pays ne le développant pas.
Si le twist durera un an et demi, le madison ne vivra qu’un semestre puisque, en fin d’année 1962, survient le mashed potatoes (patate machée, pour un trimestre !). Puis ce sera une invraisemblable irruption de nouvelles danses (parfois pré-existantes), éphémères, mortes-nées, souvent n’existant que par leur appellation : locomotion, hully-gully, slop, pony, ya ya, bunny hop, watusi, stomp, stroll, shout, climb, hucklebuck, fly, limbo, popeye, thrill, snow-cup, side-walk, jungle-jump, stop-op, sloopy, surf, snap, bird ou birland, dog, monkey, monkiss, shake, ska, skip, shimmy, letkiss, rush, pop corn, et le jerk qui est définitivement resté, mais anonymement. Sans compter bossa nova, tamouré, pachanga, sirtaki, bostella, casatschok.
Mais, le plus éphémère pouvant se révéler hautement patrimonial, qui l’eût cru, le madison se danse toujours aujourd’hui ! En général associé, en soirée ou mariage, au rock’n’roll et au twist dans une séquence rétro.

HERE IS THE MADISON!

Once the post-war swing/zazou-inspired trends had gone, and then the cha-cha-cha, mambo and calypso, even the Left Bank influence, the French music world that existed in the pre-rock ‘n’ roll age would bear almost exclusively the strong imprint of personalities who marked their era, but did so as individuals rather than collectively. The unexpected arrival of rock ‘n’ roll in the USA in the years 1954/55 created a “wave” phenomenon; it was “trend” related, a matter of “musical fraternity.” After rock—without its ‘n’ roll suffix—took up residence in France in 1960-61, together there arrived the Twist (end ‘61), a new fad that was more directly related to a dance. Whereas rock had taken a certain time to settle in, the almost-immediate impact of the Twist created a precedent, and it gave people ideas.
So in the summer of ‘62 along came the Madison. This American dance dated from the spring of 1960, only two years before, and it was the Ray Brian Combo who launched it with The Madison Time: its rhythm was slower than a twist, and it had a hint of jazz. Plus the presence of a piano or organ made the dance steps stand out whenever it was time to “do an M”, preferably as a group of dancers. The Madison spread rapidly through certain clubs in France beginning in 1962, but it still hadn’t come to real fame, nor did it have a French singer. Or at least not until June.
The singer would be Billy Bridge. Odeon Records released his second “Super 45rpm” record that June, and Billy Bridge would become their opinion-making leader maximo, the Madison’s Great Helmsman. He even went so far as to have a nickname of his own, the Prince du Madison. Contrary to what this opportunistic approach might have you think, the records of Billy Bridge (1945-1994)—before, during and after The Madison—were musically excellent, with streaks of black guitar rock that were the work of a veteran American musician named Mickey Baker, a recent French exile, assisted by some of the finest French jazz musicians.
At once, as had happened with rock ‘n’ roll in 1950, rock in 1960 and then the twist, many jumped on the bandwagon. There were those in the same “family” (close relations), like Johnny Hallyday, Sylvie Vartan, Pirates, Loups Garous…), plus entertainers (Henri Salvador, Henri Genès…), bands that went in all directions (led by Olivier Despax, Claude Bolling, Claude Vasori, Georges Jouvin, Roby Davis, Christian Chevallier or Teddy Martin, not to mention the Ambassadors…), and even those who appeared after an ad hoc baptism, like the “Madison’s”, or Harry Madison (sic). But contrary to the Twist, the Madison would not turn out to be universal, simply because in certain countries it didn’t catch on.
While the twist lasted eighteen months, the Madison lived only six, because at the end of the year 1962, the Mashed Potatoes supplanted it (for three months!) After which, there was an improbable invasion of what they called new dances (despite the fact that some had already existed) that were ephemeral or at worst still-born, or else existed in name alone: among them the locomotion, hully-gully, slop, pony, ya ya, bunny hop, watusi, stomp, stroll, shout, climb, hucklebuck, fly, limbo, popeye, thrill, snow-cup, side-walk, jungle-jump, stop-op, sloopy, surf, snap, bird or birdland, dog, monkey, monkiss, shake, ska, skip, shimmy, letkiss, rush and popcorn, plus the jerk, which remained definitively, although anonymously. To those you can add the bossa nova, tamouré, pachanga, sirtaki, bostella and kasatschok.
But, since even the most ephemeral can become part of the national heritage, the Madison (who would have believed it?) is still danced today! It’s easily recognized because, in general, at least at weddings and parties, they slip a Madison in between the twist and rock ‘n’ roll numbers in the “Retro” slot, allowing (French-speaking) jokers to whip out the pun, Si toi aussi tu m’as dit sonne…).

Après le rock’n’roll 50, le rock en 1960-61, le twist fin 1961, débarque en France à l’été 1962 le madison. Entre twist et jazz, cette danse en ligne est propagée par son prince, Billy Bridge, aussitôt suivi par tous les rockers-twisteurs de l’Hexagone. Et, aussi éphémère qu’il ait pu paraître, le madison se danse toujours aujourd’hui ! François Jouffa et Pierre Layani présentent la première anthologie de madison francophone d’époque, complétée par une sélection de la danse suivante, le mashed potatoes. After the rock ’n’ roll of 1950 came the rock of ’60/’61 and then the twist… which in France lasted until the following summer, 1962, when the Madison landed. It was between the twist and jazz—people danced it in rows—and it spread like wildfire, stoked by a “prince” named Billy Bridge, and immediately picked up by every rocker/twister in France. You might think it was a flash in the pan, but people still dance the Madison today! These recordings chosen by François Jouffa and Pierre Layani represent the first musical collection of French-language Madison from that period, complemented by examples of the trend that already followed it by the end of the year: the Mashed Potatoes… Are you ready for the big M?    Patrick Frémeaux
