Jazz on Biguine vol. 2

JAZZ ON BIGUINE
C’est peut-être une banalité de le dire mais il n’est pas inutile de le répéter : la musique – de jazz en particulier – est une histoire de rencontres, d’échanges, d’amitié. Le chemin de la création est un itinéraire sans fin pour se bâtir un monde intérieur et trouver le langage universel pour l’exprimer : celui par lequel les émotions les plus insaisissables prennent l’évidence la plus limpide. Tous les musiciens, artistes parmi les autres, ont en commun cette quête et n’ont de cesse de l’accomplir en confrontant et réunissant leurs expériences. Le nouveau disque “Jazz on Biguine” du pianiste David Fackeure est bien l’illustration de cette idée.
On se rappelle le succès remporté par le premier CD du “David Fackeure Trio”, et surtout la surprise créée dans le milieu musical et antillais par ce jeune pianiste métropolitain entré avec une rare maestria dans l’univers du jazz caraïbe où ne se rencontraient que les originaires des îles nourries du swing ancestral de la biguine. Les musiciens antillais de l’ancienne et de la nouvelle génération ont accordé un accueil chaleureux à David, aujourd’hui reconnu comme l’un des leurs. En l’espace de cinq années, le public amateur de jazz et de musique antillaise a pu apprécier la couleur harmonique et l’impulsion communicative du piano de David Fackeure dans tous les lieux où il s’est produit en province et dans la Capitale : “Petit Opportun”, “Fête des Jazz” de la Foire de Paris, “Baiser Salé”, “Canotier de la Butte”, “Autour de Midi”, “Le Houdon”, le “Duc des Lombards”… et tout récemment le “Franc Pinot” où David a présenté un quartet chaque mercredi durant trois mois.
Car c’est la grande nouveauté : le trio du départ s’est enrichi de la sonorité généreuse et efficace du saxo baryton Xavier Richardeau, musicien phare sur son instrument en France, bien connu pour ses arrangements et ses interprétations du grand jazz américain des années bop. Rencontré au hasard d’un concert dans un club de jazz, conquis d’emblée par la richesse et la subtilité des mille et une facettes de la biguine, Xavier apporte au groupe une touche originale et personnelle, élargissant la palette sonore avec son baryton qui est une première en matière de biguine. Mais Xavier ne dédaigne pas non plus l’éloquence et la flexibilité du saxo alto, porté jadis à des sommets par les Antillais Robert Mavounzy et Émilien Antile. Autre nouveauté : voici le bassiste guadeloupéen Silvio Marie, un routard de toutes les musiques, accompagnateur d’Eddy Louiss et de Ray Charles sur l’un de ses derniers disques. Il possède à fond le battement de la biguine traditionnelle et sait découvrir les ressources d’une mélodie pour stimuler les musiciens dans leurs chorus. Il se montre aussi soliste inspiré dans la mazurka “Jade et Baptiste”, une composition de David Fackeure. Quant au batteur David Gore, nous le connaissons déjà puisqu’il fait partie du groupe depuis sa création. Précision, finesse, pureté de style sont les maîtres mots qui caractérisent son jeu.
Avec ce deuxième disque, David Fackeure pousse encore plus loin, pour notre plus grand plaisir, son exploration de la biguine essentielle, née il y a cent cinquante ans dans la ville de Saint-Pierre, transportée hors des Antilles à partir des années 1920, développée, modernisée dans les années 1950 mais toujours messagère d’une histoire lourde de trois siècles. Cinq titres sont des classiques du répertoire antillais composés par Albert Lirvat, Édouard Pajaniandy, Francisco, Sylvio Siobud, Léona Gabriel... David en retire la quintessence sur son piano, dans des arrangements très personnels qui témoignent de l’intensité du travail de recherche auquel il s’est livré. Les autres morceaux sont des compositions de David ou de Xavier, dans le pur esprit de la biguine ou de la mazurka créole avec aussi une incursion très réussie dans la bossa nova.
David Fackeure nous offre de plus un cadeau d’exception avec la participation d’invités prestigieux. On ignore souvent que la comédienne martiniquaise Jenny Alpha fut autrefois chanteuse de variétés typiques et qu’elle dirigea un orchestre de danse. En avant-première d’un album qui lui sera entièrement consacré, elle recrée pour nous, avec toute la charge émotionnelle de ses quatre-vingt-quinze printemps, une mélodie de Sylvio Siobud qu’elle avait enregistrée au début des années cinquante. Quant à Thomas Dutronc, devenu l’un des guitaristes les plus en vue du jazz manouche, il a accompli dans sa spécialité la même performance que David dans le jazz caraïbe. Rien ne les prédestinait tous deux à des genres musicaux si éloignés de leurs origines. Leur rencontre fusionnelle, alliant tradition, passion et virtuosité dans un vieux standard de la biguine, représente d’une certaine manière la réunion possible de deux avatars d’une même musique nomade ayant parcouru des chemins différents et revenue métamorphosée après des siècles d’exil et d’emprunts à des cultures multiples à travers le monde.

A commonplace fact, but we feel it worth repeating once again :  music – jazz in particular – results from encounters, exchange and friendship.  Creation is a never-ending path for the fashioning of an interior world and for finding a universal language to express it:  a voice which can communicate manifold forms of emotion and translate them for all to hear.  All musicians, artists among the others, share this same quest and continue to accomplish their ambitions through the confrontation and reuniting of their various experiences.  The new album, ‘Jazz on Biguine’ by pianist David Fackeure is a fine illustration of this idea.

We can remember the success of the debut album made by the ‘David Fackeure Trio’ and the resulting surprise in the music and French West Indian world through this young pianist from mainland France who had entered the universe of Caribbean jazz with a rare flourish – a sphere housing only those from the islands, brought up with the ancestral swing of the biguine.  West Indian musicians from the old and new generation gave David a warm welcome and he is now recognized as one of them.  Over a five-year span, lovers of jazz and West Indian music came to appreciate the harmonic shades and communicative impulsion offered by David Fackeure’s piano each time he was billed either in the French provinces or in the capital:  in the ‘Petit Opportun’, ‘Fête des Jazz’ in the Paris trade fair, ‘Baiser Salé’, ‘Canotier de la Butte’, ‘Autour de Midi’, ‘Le Houdon’, the ‘Duc des Lombards’ and recently in the ‘Franc Pinot’ where David headed a quartet every Wednesday for three months.
And this was the great innovation:  the original trio boasted the additional rich and efficient sound of the baritone saxist Xavier Richardeau, a prominent figure in France, reputed for his arrangements and renditions of the best American jazz during the bop era.  After a chance meeting in a jazz club on the night of a concert, Xavier was immediately captivated by the richness and subtleness of the biguine’s countless facets and brought his original and personal touch to the group, adding to its palette of sound with his baritone – an all-time first for the biguine.  But Xavier also enjoys the eloquence and flexibility of the alto sax, an instrument which had previously held sway in the hands of the French West Indians Robert Mavounzy and Emilien Antile.  Another inclusion was Guadeloupian bassist Silvio Marie, well-versed in all musical genres and who accompanied Eddy Louiss and Ray Charles on one of his last albums.  He masters the beat of the traditional biguine and is able to reveal the aspects of a tune to stimulate the musicians in their choruses.  He also shines as an inspired soloist in the mazurka ‘Jade et Baptiste’, a composition signed by David Fackeure.  And we already know David Gore as he is an original member of the band.  His playing is characterized by precision, finesse, and a pureness of style.

In this second disc, we can enjoy David Fackeure delving even further into essential biguine, a genre born a hundred and fifty years ago in Saint-Pierre, and which ventured away from the French West Indies in the 1920s to be developed and modernized in the fifties, but still acting as messenger of three centuries of loaded history.  Five titles are classics of the West Indian repertory, composed by Albert Lirvat, Edouard Pajaniandy, Francisco, Sylvio Siobud and Léona Gabriel.  David presides on the piano, in the very personal arrangements which portray his intense research.  The other pieces are signed by David or Xavier and capture the essence of the biguine or Creole mazurka, and also include a very successful excursion into the realm of the bossa nova.

Furthermore, David Fackeure treats us with the participation of prestigious guests.  Many of us are unaware that the Martinique actress Jenny Alpha used to be a typical variety singer and headed a dance band.  As a preview to an album entirely dedicated to this lady, she interprets, using the bounteous emotion from her ninety-five years of experience, a tune by Sylvio Siobud which she had recorded in the early fifties.  And then we find Thomas Dutronc, one of the leading guitarists in gypsy jazz and whose role in his particular speciality can be compared to David’s in Caribbean jazz.  Both excel in musical genres so removed from their origins.  Their coalescent encounter, combining tradition, passion and virtuosity in an old biguine standard, represents in a way the possible reunion of two avatars of the same nomadic music, having followed different paths to return transformed after centuries of exile and marked by numerous forms of culture from across the planet.
