Concerts naturels - Taïga - Toundra / Soundscapes

Entre le cercle polaire et l’Océan Arctique (Mer de Barents) la nature européenne passe de la taïga à la toundra. La forêt de conifères et de bouleaux s’éclaircit progressivement, les arbres sont de plus en plus petits et finissent par disparaître au profit des lichens. Des glaciers, aujour­d’hui disparus, ont raboté les reliefs de la Norvège, la Suède, la Finlande et l’Ouest de la Russie. Les paysages sont doux, parsemés de lacs dont un grand nombre, comme l’Inari Järvi, dépassent cent kilomètres de long. La limite entre les lacs et la forêt est le plus souvent constituée de tourbières impénétrables. Le climat marqué par près de huit mois de gel continu, suivi d’un été bref au cours duquel les averses de neige ne sont pas rares. Ces conditions ne laissent que très peu de temps aux végétaux pour assurer leur croissance et aux animaux pour se reproduire. Migrateurs, ou hautement spécialisés, les animaux ne sont présents qu’en très faible quantité à l’intérieur des terres. Par contre, les côtes foisonnent de vie. Mouettes, goélands, limicoles… abondent dans un contraste saisissant avec la toundra qui précède. Une autre particularité frappe les ornithologues : les oiseaux chantent à n’importe quelle heure car durant deux mois le soleil ne se couche jamais. On peut ainsi entendre simultanément une Chouette de Tengmalm et un Pinson du nord ou une Chouette épervière et un Pouillot fitis. Cela donne lieu à des concerts insolites et parfois extraordinaires. Cet album retrace un voyage effectué aux mois de mai et de juin 1993. Il commence sur le cercle polaire au nord du Golfe de Botnie et se termine sur les côtes de l’Océan Arctique. Les animaux ne sont pas isolés de leur contexte, ainsi le vent garde sa place lorsqu’il souffle dans les conifères, qu’il soulève des vaguelettes à la surface des lacs ou encore lorsqu’il secoue les lèches des marais. Le rythme général de l’écriture sonore, bien que condensé, reproduit la sensation d’étirement du temps propre aux forêts boréales.

Between the Arctic Circle and the Arctic Ocean (Barents Sea) European nature changes from taiga to tundra. The forest of conifers and beech becomes increasingly sparse, the trees are smaller and smaller and finally disappear altogether to be replaced by lichen. Glaciers, that have now disappeared, smoothed down the contours of Norway, Sweden, Finland and western Russia. The landscape is gentle, with a smattering of lakes, many of which are over a hundred kilometres long. The border between the lakes and the forest is often formed by impenetrable bogs. The climate is marked by almost eight months of continuous frost, followed by a short summer, during which snow showers are not uncommon. These conditions do not leave much time for vegetation to grow and animals to reproduce. There are only small numbers of animals inland and they are either migrant species or highly specialised. On the other hand, the coastline is densely populated. There are various types of gull and sandpiper, in far greater quantities than in the tundra further inland. Ornithologists will also note another particularity: during a two-month period the sun never sets and birds consequently sing at all hours of the day and night. It is thus possible to hear Boreal owls singing alongside bramblings, or hawk-owls with willow warblers. This gives rise to unusual and sometimes quite extraordinary concerts of bird song. This album records a journey made in May and June 1993. It starts on the Arctic Circle to the north of the Gulf of Bothnia and ends on the shores of the Arctic Ocean. Animals are not taken out of context, nor is the wind, blowing through the pine trees, rustling the water of northern lakes or shaking the reeds in the marshes. The overall rhythm of the record, although necessarily condensed, reflects the sensation of long, drawn-out time that is particular to the Boreal forests.
