Introduction
Parfois inaccessibles, perchées en haut d’une falaise ou établies sur une île, les colonies d’oiseaux marins sont souvent interdites d’accès pour assurer leur protection. Aussi le simple promeneur ou l’ornithologue amateur a rarement l’occasion d’entendre leurs ambiances sonores étonnamment belles et puissantes. Ce CD vous propose de découvrir ces ambiances comme si vous étiez vous-même un oiseau, au beau milieu de la colonie. L’enregistrement est fait avec des micros placés au sein des colonies et reliés par câble ou par radio au bateau resté en mer, sur lequel l’enregistreur était installé.
Parce que les oiseaux marins sont sociaux et qu’ils vivent dans une promiscuité très grande, et aussi parce qu’ils sont entourés par le bruit incessant et puissant de la mer, ils ont besoin de communiquer sans arrêt entre eux par des cris forts, source d’un vacarme souvent inouï. En écoutant ces ambiances sauvages, c’est peut-être les yeux fermés que vous pourrez le mieux imaginer la scène : des oiseaux volant en tous sens, décollant ou atterrissant bruyamment, paradant sur leurs nids, se disputant les poissons qui pendent de leurs becs au retour de la pêche... Les petits cris fins et aigus que l’on entend dans différents passages sont ceux des poussins quémandant de la nourriture. Au-delà du plaisir d’entendre ces ambiances vous pourrez aussi utiliser ce CD comme un “guide d’identification sonore” grâce à ses nombreux index : chaque index correspond à des cris d’une seule espèce, située au premier plan sonore, donc bien distincts du concert général. Pour certaines espèces vous retrouverez des index dans différents concerts ; vous découvrirez ainsi la grande variété de cris au sein d’une même espèce.

Introduction
Often inaccessible, perched high on a cliff or established on an island, seabird colonies are often out of bounds in order to assure their protection. Thus anyone simply out for a walk or the amateur ornithologist has rarely the chance of hearing these surprisingly strong and beautiful sound atmospheres. This CD allows the listener to discover these atmospheres as if they where a bird, amongst many others, within the colony. The recordings were made with a microphone placed within a colony with cable or radio connection to a recorder on a boat at sea.
Because seabirds are sociable with large numbers living in close proximity and in order to stand out against the loud and constant sound of the sea, they need to keep up continual communication between themselves with loud calls, source of an unbelievable din. Whilst listening to these natural atmospheres, maybe the scene is easier to imagine with eyes closed; birds flying in ever direction, landing and taking off noisily, displaying on their nests, squabbling over fish hanging from their beaks as they return from fishing ... The short, thin, high-pitched calls that can be heard in some of the recordings are those of chicks begging for food. Other than the pleasure of simply listening to the sound atmospheres this CD can be used as a “sound identification guide” thanks to its numerical indexing; each index corresponds to the calls of a single species, in the foreground of the recording, thus distinct from the general concert. Some species are indexed for more than one concert; in such a way it’s possible to discover the great variety of calls often given by a single species.
