Issu d’une famille de musiciens, Patrick ‘Romane’ Leguidcoq étudie la musique dès son plus jeune âge. Après 13 ans de piano, il se sent attiré par la guitare, instrument pratiqué par ses père et grand-père et va souvent joindre les gitans et manouches aux Puces de Clignancourt, à la Chope, haut lieu parisien de la musique de Django.
Qui aurait pu penser que l’illumination reinhardtienne donnerait naissance à un jazz manouche plus vivace que jamais 60 ans plus tard ? Si les épigones de Django sont légion depuis quelques années, beaucoup proposent servilement une copie conforme du génial disparu, oubliant l’essentiel, c’est-à-dire l’esprit de liberté qui habitait sa musique. Romane a brillamment démontré avec ses trois précédents disques qu’il était possible de faire fructifier l’héritage du maître en suivant des sentiers personnels.
Ce CD enregistré lors d’un séjour aux USA (Romane s’est notamment produit avec succès devant 8000 personnes au Grand Ole Opry, temple de la musique country à Nashville, jouant avec des pointures de la six-cordes comme Mark O’Connor ou John Jorgenson) présente le style d’une manière plus orthodoxe. S’agissant de rappeler aux Américains qu’une école tzigane du jazz est bien présente et vivace sur le vieux continent, Romane ravive ici sans tricherie ni facilité, les charmes d’un répertoire qui n’est pas neuf, et où il est pour le moins difficile de se démarquer des versions de référence : Nuage, Minor Swing, Douce Ambiance ou Django’s Waltz (Montagne Sainte-Geneviève), pour ce qui est des compositions du maître, Passion de Muréna, et Mintch Waltz de Baro Ferret pour les valses swing, ou Sweet Sue, Rose Room et I Can’t Give You Anything But Love pour les standards.
Très bien accompagné par Bob Burns à la contrebasse, vraisemblablement pour des raisons de quotas syndicaux, et par son vieux complice Laurent Bajata, aussi à l’aise dans l’accompagnement (pompe légère et très efficace) que dans ses interventions en solo (son phrasé est moins gitan et plus strictement jazz), Romane revisite le répertoire avec humilité et respect des œuvres?; pas de reproduction mimétique ici mais une inspiration soutenue qui n’oublie ni le swing ni l’élégance.
Si les héritiers de Django se bousculent au portillon, Romane est sans aucun doute l’un des meilleurs représentants de ce style créé par l’illustre manouche, qu’il vénère au point d’habiter désormais Samois-sur-Seine.

Born in a family of musicians, Patrick ‘Romane’ Leguidcoq has studied music since an early age. After 13 years at the piano, he was drawn to the guitar, an instrument played by both his father and grandfather. He can often be found mingling with Gypsies and “Manouches” at the Chope, a Parisian hangout for Django music lovers at the flea market in Clignancourt.
Who would have thought that sixty years later the Reinhardt enlightenment would give birth to a “Manouche” jazz style liver than ever? If there have been legions of Django followers for many years, many submissively propose a carbon copy of the late genius, forgetting the most important, the feeling of freedom that inspires his music. In his last three albums, Romane has brilliantly showed that he could develop the master’s heritage while following is own path. This CD recorded during a trip to the States (Romane made a big hit before 8000 people at the Grand Ole Opry, the temple of country music in Nashville playing with six-string legends like Mark O’Connor or John Jorgenson) brings us back to the source. Wanting to remind the Americans that a Gypsy jazz school is indeed alive and well in the old world, Romane brightens up the charm of a traditional repertory. To say the least, it’s not an easy task putting a personal touch on the following classic numbers: Nuage, Minor Swing, Douce Ambiance and Django’s Waltz, all composed by the master, Passion by Muréna, Minch Waltz by Baro Ferret for the swinging waltzes, and finally Sweet Sue, Rose Room and I Can’t Give You Anything But Love for the standard hits.
Here Romane is very nicely backed by Bob Burns on the double bass, apparently to meet union quotas, and by his old friend Laurent Bajata, equally at ease with his accompaniment (efficient and light chunk-chunk) as with his solo performances (his phrasing is more strictly jazz than gypsy). Here Romane revisits the collection with humility and respect for the works. It is not just a note to note reproduction, but an unfailing inspiration packed with swing and elegance. There are many Django followers, but Romane is without a doubt one of the best representatives of this style created by the famous “Manouche”. He even lives in Samois-sur-Seine, where his idol, Django, once resided.
