She was a classically trained pianist, and she began her career in Paris thanks to Eddie Barclay, who had invited her to go to France. Then American impresario Norman Granz gave Blossom’s career a worldwide dimension when he signed her to a contract with his own Verve label. Blossom Dearie 1952-1959
The continental (Con Conrad / Herb Magidson), The boy next door (Hugh Martin, Ralph Blane), They can’t take that away from me (George Gershwin & Ira Gershwin), Moonlight saving time (Irving Kahal / Harry Richman), The surrey with the fringe on top (Richard Rodgers / Oscar Hammerstein II), April in Paris (Vernon Duke / E.Y. Harburg), Blue moon (Richard Rodgers / Lorenz Hart), Down in the depths (Cole Porter) (33 tours 25 cm Barclay 88.001) sorti en 1955. Harburg), Autumn in New York (James.F Hanley / Henry Sullivan), Flamingo (Ted Grouya / Edmund Andersonn), There will never be another you (Carl O. Bergner) (45 tours EP 17 cm Barclay 74.017).
L’album éponyme comporte quatorze titres : Deed I do (Fred Rose / Walter Hirsch), Lover man (Oh where can you be) (James Sherman / Jimmy Davis / Roger Ramirez), Everything I’ve got (Rodgers & Hart), Comment allez-vous ? (Murray Grand), More than you know (Billy Rose / Edward Eliscu / Vincent Youmans), Thou swell (Rodgers & Hart), It might as well be spring (Rodgers & Hammerstein), Tout doucement (Émile Jean Mercadier / René Clausier), You for me (Bob Haymes), Now at last (Bob Haymes), I hear music (Burton Lane / Franck Loesser), Wait till you see her (Rodgers & Hart), I won’t dance (Jerome Kern / Jimmy McHugh & Dorothy Fields / Oscar Hammerstein II / Otto Harbach), A fine spring morning (Bob Haymes) (33 tours 30 cm Verve Records MG V-2037 – USA). C’est avec la même formation, qu’elle enregistre son deuxième album : Give Him The Ooh-La-La : Just one of those things (Cole Porter), Like someone in love (Jimmy Van Heusen / Johnny Burke), Between the devil and the deep blue sea (Harold Arlen / Ted Koehler), They say It’s spring (Bob Haymes / Marty Clarke), Try your wings (Dion McGregor / Michael Barr), Bang goes the drum (and you’re in love) (David Heneken), The riviera (Cy Coleman / Joseph Mc Carthy Jr), The middle of love (Billy Wallington / Maurice Goodman), Plus je t’embrasse (Ben Ryan / Max François), Give him the ooh-La-La (Cole Porter), Let me love you (Bart Howard), I walk a little faster (Carolyn leigh / Cy Coleman) (33 tours 30 cm Verve Records MGV-2081 - 1958 – USA).
A Summertime, Tea for two (Irving Caesar / Vincent Youmans), The surrey with the fringe on top (Rodgers & Hammerstein), Moonlight saving time (Harry Richman / Irving Kahal), It amazes me (Carolyn Leigh / Cy Coleman), If I were a bell (Frank Loasser), We’re together (Don Elliot / Steve Allen), Teach me tonight (Gene DePaul / Sammy Cahn), Once upon a summertime (Eddie Barclay / Johnny Mercer / Michel Legrand), Down with love (E.Y. Harburg / Harold Arlen), Manhattan (Rodgers & Hart), Doop-dee-de-doop (A Doodlin’ Song) (Carolyn Leigh / Cy Coleman), Love is here to stay (George & Ira Gershwin) 33 tours 30 cm Verve Records - MGV-2111 - 1958 – USA. Elle est accompagnée de Ray Brown à la basse, Ed Thigpen à la batterie, Kenny Burrell à la guitare et Bobby Jaspar à la flute et au saxophone ténor : Little jazz bird (George & Ira gershwin), Gentleman friend (Arnold B. Horwitt / Richard Lewine), It’s too good to talk about now (Carolyn leigh / Cy coleman), Chez moi (Jean féline / Paul Misraki / Bruce Siever), You fascinate me so (Coleman / Leigh), You’ve got something I want (Bob Haymes), Boum (E.Ray Goetz / Charles Trenet), L’étang (Paul Misraki), Hello love (Michel Preston Barr / Dion Mcgregor), Someone to watch over me (George & Ira Gershwin) 33 tours 30 cm Verve Records - MGV-21251 - 1959 – USA. Le second album de 1959 est intégralement consacré aux chansons du duo Betty Comden et Adolph Green : Blossom Dearie Sings Comden and Green, Lucky to be me (Adolph Green / Betty Comden / Jule Styne), Just in time (Adolph Green / Betty Comden / Jule Styne), Some other time (Adolph Green / Betty Comden / Jule Styne), Dance only with me (Adolph Green / Betty Comden / Jule Styne), I like myself (Adolph Green / André Prévin / Betty Comden), The party’s over (Adolph Green / Betty Comden / Jule Styne), How will he know (Adolph Green / Betty Comden / Jule Styne), It’s love (Adolph Green / Betty Comden / Leonard Berstein), Hold me, hold me, hold me (Adolph Green / Betty Comden / Jule Styne), Lonely town (Adolph Green / Betty Comden / Leonard Berstein) 33 tours 30 cm Verve Records - MGV-2109 - 1959 – USA.

Blossom Dearie 1952-1959
by Olivier Julien
Blossom Dearie turned the codes of jazz inside out with a voice that had a childlike softness. As a talented pianist steeped in two different cultures – America and France – she contributed to introduce great songwriters to audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. As a Parisienne by adoption, she founded the Blue Stars vocal group and, thanks to Eddie Barclay, obtained her first recording contract before she later signed with the prestigious American jazz label Verve. It resulted in international recognition for her.
Born Margrethe Blossom Dearie in East Durham, New York, she was raised in America by her Irish-Scottish father and her mother, who was of Norwegian origins. Dearie studied classical piano as a child and then discovered jazz in her teens. After High School she moved to New York City, beginning her career in various groups such as The Blue Flames (with Woody Herman and his Orchestra) or The Blue Reys (with Alvino Rey’s band), before recording her voice in 1952 on a disc by King Pleasure: the title was Moody’s Mood for Love (James Moody/King Pleasure, 45rpm 7” Prestige 45-924.) The same year, she settled in Paris and created The Blue Stars, an eight-piece vocal group which also featured Michel Legrand’s sister, singer Christiane Legrand. The group became well-known in 1954 after the success of La Légende du pays aux oiseaux, a Jean Constantin adaptation (arranged by Michel Legrand) of the George Shearing song Lullaby of Birdland. It was in the French capital that Blossom Dearie met her future husband, the Belgian jazz saxophonist & flautist Bobby Jaspar. Eddie Barclay, who produced The Blue Stars’ album, could see Blossom’s special talents and gave her the chance to record her first album under her own name (on which she plays piano but doesn’t sing), entitled Miss Blossom Dearie et sa musique Jazz-sweet, featuring the titles The continental (Con Conrad/Herb Magidson), The boy next door (Hugh Martin, Ralph Blane), They can’t take that away from me (George Gershwin & Ira Gershwin), Moonlight saving time (Irving Kahal/Harry Richman), The surrey with the fringe on top (Richard Rodgers/Oscar Hammerstein II), April in Paris (Vernon Duke/E.Y. Harburg), Blue moon (Richard Rodgers/Lorenz Hart), and Down in the depths (Cole Porter), all of which appeared in 1955 on the 10” Barclay 33rpm LP N° 88.001. A 45rpm single (previously unreleased on CD until its appearance here) was released in 1956 under the title Blossom Dearie Piano, with four songs – Old Devil Moon (Burton Lane/E.Y. Harburg), Autumn in New York (James F. Hanley/Henry Sullivan), Flamingo (Ted Grouya/Edmund Anderson), and There will never be another you (Carl O. Bergner) – under the reference Barclay 74.017. It was while she was in Paris that American impresario Norman Granz heard her and signed her to a contract with the label he’d founded in the USA, the legendary Verve Records.
When Blossom returned to America in 1956, The Blue Stars continued to record for another two years led by Mimi Perrin, and the group evolved into The Swingle Singers. Blossom Dearie’s first American album would be recorded as soon as she returned to the States (1956), with Blossom playing piano in a group featuring bassist Ray Brown, guitarist Herb Ellis and Jo Jones on drums. That album (Blossom Dearie) had 14 titles: ‘Deed I do (Fred Rose/Walter Hirsch), Lover man (Oh where can you be) (James Sherman/Jimmy Davis/Roger Ramirez), Everything I’ve got (Rodgers & Hart), Comment allez-vous? (Murray Grand), More than you know (Billy Rose/Edward Eliscu/Vincent Youmans), Thou swell (Rodgers & Hart), It might as well be spring (Rodgers & Hammerstein), Tout doucement (Émile Jean Mercadier/René Clausier), You for me (Bob Haymes), Now at last (Bob Haymes), I hear music (Burton Lane/Franck Loesser), Wait till you see her (Rodgers & Hart), I won’t dance (Jerome Kern/Jimmy McHugh & Dorothy Fields/Oscar Hammerstein II/Otto Harbach) and A fine spring morning (Bob Haymes), and it was released in the USA as a 12” Verve LP with the reference MG V-2037.
Two years later (1958), Blossom recorded her second album with the same group. Give Him The Ooh-La-La carried the tracks Just one of those things (Cole Porter), Like someone in love (Jimmy Van Heusen/Johnny Burke), Between the devil and the deep blue sea (Harold Arlen/Ted Koehler), They say It’s spring (Bob Haymes/Marty Clarke), Try your wings (Dion McGregor/Michael Barr), Bang goes the drum (and you’re in love) (David Heneken), The riviera (Cy Coleman/Joseph McCarthy Jr), The middle of love (Billy Wallington/Maurice Goodman), Plus je t’embrasse (Ben Ryan/Max François), Give him the ooh-La-La (Cole Porter), Let me love you (Bart Howard) and I walk a little faster (Carolyn Leigh/Cy Coleman), on another 12” LP for Verve (MGV-2081). French guitarist Thomas Dutronc confessed he was indebted to Blossom Dearie’s Plus je t’embrasse when he produced his own version of the title for his 2020 album Frenchy.
Blossom Dearie’s friendships with Eddie Barclay and Michel Legrand encouraged the pair of them to come up with piano-based compositions and, for one of the themes written by Legrand, Eddie introduced Blossom Dearie to lyricist Eddy Marnay. That tune would become La Valse des Lilas, a magic song that was at once recorded by three singers: Renée Lebas, Catherine Sauvage and Jacqueline François. One day Blossom played it for the American songwriter Johnny Mercer, who adapted the song into English as Once Upon A Summertime. Blossom quickly recorded it – as did Tony Bennett and Sarah Vaughan – and it became the title-song for her new album, which she recorded with Ray Brown (bass) Mundell Lowe (guitar) and Ed Thigpen (drums). Apart from Once Upon A Summertime, the disc featured Tea for two (Irving Caesar/Vincent Youmans), The Surrey with the Fringe on Top (Rodgers & Hammerstein), Moonlight saving time (Harry Richman/Irving Kahal), It amazes me (Carolyn Leigh/Cy Coleman), If I were a bell (Frank Loesser), We’re together (Don Elliot/Steve Allen), Teach me tonight (Gene DePaul/Sammy Cahn), Down with love (E.Y. Harburg/Harold Arlen), Manhattan (Rodgers & Hart), Doop-dee-de-doop (A Doodlin’ Song) (Carolyn Leigh/Cy Coleman) and Love is here to stay (George & Ira Gershwin). It was released in 1958 by Verve on the 12” LP MGV-2111.
1959 was a very busy year with not one, but two albums. The first was My Gentleman Friend (Verve 12” LP MGV-21251), which included the Charles Trenet title Boum! and two songs by Paul Misraki. With bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen, Kenny Burrell on guitar and Bobby Jaspar playing flute and tenor saxophone, Blossom recorded Little Jazz Bird (George & Ira Gershwin), Gentleman friend (Arnold B. Horwitt/Richard Lewine), It’s too good to talk about now (Carolyn Leigh/Cy Coleman), Chez moi (Jean Féline/Paul Misraki/Bruce Siever), You fascinate me so (Coleman/Leigh), You’ve got something I want (Bob Haymes), Boum (E.Ray Goetz/Charles Trenet), L’étang (Paul Misraki), Hello love (Michel Preston Barr/Dion McGregor) and Someone to watch over me (George & Ira Gershwin).
Blossom Dearie’s second 1959 recording was devoted entirely to songs by writers Betty Comden & Adolph Green, and carried the simple title Blossom Dearie Sings Comden and Green. The songs were Lucky to be me, Just in time, Some other time, Dance only with me, The party’s over, How will he know and Hold me, hold me, hold me (all signed Adolph Green/Betty Comden/Jule Styne), I like myself (Adolph Green/André Prévin/Betty Comden), plus It’s Love and Lonely Town (by Adolph Green/Betty Comden/Leonard Bernstein). It also appeared on a Verve 12” with the reference MGV-2109.
In all, Blossom Dearie would record six albums for Verve Records. She regularly guested on Dave Garroway’s Today Show, and in 1962 she recorded an advertising jingle for Hires root beer that was extremely popular. In 1964 she made the album May I come in?, atypically accompanied by a full orchestra, and this period saw many appearances by her in the clubs of New York before singing for the first time (in 1966) at Ronnie Scott’s jazz club in London. She made no fewer than four albums in England during the Sixties, all for the label Fontana. In 1974 Blossom Dearie founded her own label Daffodil Records, which allowed her greater control over her productions and their distribution. She was regularly on television throughout her career, and also lent her voice to the educational programme Schoolhouse Rock. In 1983 she received the first Mabel Mercer Foundation Award. The songs (and voice) of Blossom Dearie have been featured in numerous films, and she enjoyed associations with other artists including Lyle Lovett while continuing to appear in clubs in England and America up until 2006. She died after a long illness on 7 February 2009, at home in her Sheridan Square apartment in New York’s Greenwich Village.
