« … There are forty tracks here and as with some previous volumes in this series the styles run the gamut from r&b/ jump, via country boogie and western swing. Two things make this collection worthwhile, the quality of the music and the fact that, to my mind, Frémeaux have chosen some less obvious items for a compilation of this nature. The opening tracks on the both records make for an interesting comparaison ; I happen to be somenone who likes both versions of « Rocket 88 ». Sam Phillips, who recorded the Brenston version, supposedly said some time later that he classed it as the first r&b record ever. Be that as it may, Haley did a pretty good copy, albeit in a country/ ws style. (…) One item that keeps me hitting the replay button is Leon Keiley’s ‘Guitar Breakdown’, very entertaining stuff ; but then that applies to the collection as a whole. It’s in the very acceptable Frémeaux house style, the informative notes are in the French and english and you get the bonus of a discography. » Pat Harrison – BLUES & RHYTHM
