Yole, with its roots in Vendée, has become one of France’s best folk groups, althought the group also draws from other genres, most obviously jazz with a slight nod to progressive rock. The songs are by Henry Texier, the only original member left, who sings and plays a wide range of instruments, such as hurdy-gurdy, oboe, flute, and pipes. The arrangements are by keyboardist Louis-Marie Moreau. A bass player, a a drummer, and several guests fill in the rest. Some of the songs draw their tunes or inspiration from various regions of France, but others are based on mythology, as well ; The title song alludes to Atlantis, while « Abysses » is a tribute to submarines. As the CD title implies, the songs deal with the sea, but the half-traditional/half-modern arrangements give the songs an especially original cachet. Each song is briefly described in English.
