Catégories : Article de presse ( Article de presse )The archive wing of french label Fremeaux and Associates specialises in compiling out-of-print material from around the world, and this collection of vintage Bahamas goombay may be their most compelling set. Because of close proximity to the USA, the music of the Bahamas has often been heavy on American influence, but the frequent inter-island cruise ships also brought elements from Jamaïca, Trinidad, the Dominican Republic and elsewhere. Thus, Blind Blake’s Yes !Yes !Yes ! is a reworking of Stomp Johnson’s Yas Yas Yas, Vincent Martin adapts Wilmouth Houdini’s famous calypso, Uncle Joe, while André Toussaint provides a hybrid instrumental, Nassau Merengue, and Charlie Adamson implores us to Dance The Goombay. Several songs deal with zombie experiences, the power of rum and other appealing aspects of Nassau, the end result being a very agreable listen with plenty of unexpected twists along the way. Catégories : Article de presse ( Article de presse )Cette livraison regroupe huit titres de 1958 gravés avant et après le passage de Mahalia au Newport Jazz Festival (dont les interprétations live ou réenregistrées en studio étaient incluses dans le précédent volume de cette intégrale) et neuf issue de deux séances du début 1959. C’est une période où la chanteuse, devenue « la » référence d’un public blanc et international en matière de gospel, n’en garde pas moins une forte assise dans sa communauté d’origine : à cet égard, Jean Buzelin relève dans son livret que des thèmes aussi différents que For My Good Fortune, au traitement proche du rhythm & blues, et le traditionnel Elijah’s Rock furent publiés en 45-tours à destination des acheteurs noirs. Le clou de ce volume est censé être la version de Trouble of the World que donne Mahalia dans le film Imitation of Life (Le Mirage de la Vie) de Douglas Sirk. Shadow Wilson, qui a beaucoup influencé Elvin Jones, a sans aucun doute tiré le fameux break doublé à la toute fin de Queer Street [enregistré en 1945 avec Count Basie, NDRL] en s’inspirant d’un roulement de Chick Webb. Ce que l’on entend ici témoigne de la formidable énergie de ce batteur et de la qualité de son orchestre, qui gagnait haut la main face à celui de Belly Goodman lors de batailles mémorables. Rather, it is emotional and social intelligence that make him such a great listener and responder to fellow musicians.With trumpeter Eric Le Lann in addition to Gomez on Threefold, Alvim is livelier. He seems outright happy as the melodies bounce in and out and the changes are rung. He is expansive here too, as fleet, lively lines are unpacked with extended harmonies to open up new emotional horizons. Gomez takes an interesting tack here with two collaborators: the increased responsibility seems to make him more versatile. He responds on the one hand to Alvim’s romantic classicism and on the other to the more staccato and offbeat trumpet of Le Lann. He can even comp his own solos, using stops in the background to percussive effect while he walks the bass. Again, this is a lively but subdued effort. He’s a talented composer and improviser, as well as a remarkably proficient instrumentalist, exploring new paths within a traditional framework. Finesse, by Christopher’s Django à la Creole trio (with guitarists David Blenkhorn and Dave Kelbie and bassist Sébastien Giradot) is a somewhat harderswinging affair that also covers plenty of Bechet, mixing his New Orleans flavor with the gypsy swing of Django Reinhardt. The album opens and closes with Bechet tunes, packed in between with Swing Era (and earlier) gems by the likes of Reinhardt, Rex Stewart and Hoagy Carmichael. The group handles all these tunes with poise and dexterity, whether it’s Reinhardt’s frenetic “Féerie Eyes” or Duke Ellington’s timeless ballad “Mood Indigo”, given an especially beautiful treatment here. For example, the Finnish tangos are mostly performed in minor keys, and the main instrument is usually the accordion rather than the bandoneon. Anyone seeking to find out more about the history of Finnischer Tango should seek out two superb (albeit hard-to-find) compilations bearing that name on the German Trikont label. Another option is to seek out an excellent recent example of the genre: The sextet known as Tango-Orkestri Unto, named after Finnish tango composer Unto Mononen, is led by pianist-arranger Timo Alakotila (a founding member of JPP) and includes singer Pirjo Aittomäki, well-known Finnish accordionist Johanna Juhola, violinist Mauno Järvela (also of JPP), and the bassist from Värttinä.
