Catégories : Article de presse ( Article de presse )« Le temps est un petit malin : en faisant vite, après vision de la couverture, j’ai cherché au dos quelle chanson du film Le mépris (de Jean-Luc Godard) figurait dans ce coffret, j’avais confondu Curd Jürgens et Michel Piccoli… Toujours dans le registre du temps, il est ici question d’un temps que les moins de vingt ans ne peuvent pas connaître, d’un temps où la durée de vie, de passage en radio, de refrain dans les cours (« petits formats ») des chansons était beaucoup plus longue qu’aujourd’hui. D’un temps où, comme chante Serge Lama, : les chanteurs et chanteuses avaient de la voix. D’un temps où Jean Sablon fit scandale en chantant devant un micro. Bonsoir jolie madame venez écouter Le piano de la plage qui joue en Sol, en solitude Dans les pharmacies ou Le jardin extraordinaire… Il vous manque lesquelles : La mer, Nationale 7, Débit de lait, Le soleil a rendez-vous… peut-être mais vous avouerez que pour se donner du courage avant d’aller travailler le matin, à siffloter ou fredonner dans sa salle de bain, c’est pas mal, non ? Vous avez noté que dans la liste ci-dessus je ne parle que des chansons que « l’on aime », j’ai gardé pour la fin, pour la bonne bouche celle qui m’émeut – elle bénéficie d’ailleurs d’une introduction – La folle complainte. Je vous avoue qu’au passage à propos du petit écureuil il m’arrive souvent d’avoir la larme à l’œil. Et ce final ! En plus elle est facile à retenir, [...]

On notera la présence d’une joueuse de claquettes, généralement absentes des formations New Orleans (même si certains instrumentistes fixaient sous leurs chaussures des capsules de soda pour faire entendre leurs battements de rythme). Horace Silver’s Live In Paris 14 Fevrier 1959 releases for the initial time the pianist-composer’s first Paris concert. With trumpeter Blue Mitchell, tenor-saxophonist Junior Cook, bassist Gene Taylor, and drummer Louis Hayes, Silver is heard leading the most famous version of his quintet, one that had just recorded Finger Poppin’ for Blue Note. Their Paris set features the group on lengthy versions of “The Preacher,” the uptempo “Room 608,” “Doodlin’” (which is 18 minutes long), “Senor Blues” and the obscure piano feature “Sweet Stuff.” The performances are more bop and less funk-oriented than they would become with Cook (a new member of the group) [...]

Barney Wilen’s 1954-1961 is a three-CD set that covers the first period of the excellent French saxophonist’s career. Wilen (1937-96) played soprano-sax early in his career (inspired originally by Sidney Bechet) but became best known as a strong hard bop-oriented tenor-saxophonist who at times in the 1950s could remind one of Sonny Rollins. He had many opportunities starting in 1954 to play with visiting American jazz greats, making his recording debut that year with drummer Roy Haynes’ group.
