“Florence Fourcarde is a marvelous Gypsy jazz violinist whose quartet includes two guitarists (one electric and one acoustic) and a double-bass player. Fourcade used to lead a group called the Mademoiselle Swing Quartet, but this is her first recording with this group of musicians. The album opens with a few measures of swinging baroque music before seguing into “Sweet Georgia Brown”, a ubiquitous tune for this kind of group but one which she succeeds in making sound fresh The same kind of intro is used for Django Reinhardt’s “Minor Swing”. Her originals, including one that’s an elegy to “Mr. Grappelli” are also compelling. Other well-known tunes include “Swing 42”, “That’s All”, “Les yeux Noirs”, and Cole Porter’s “Love for Sale”. In terms of Gypsy jazz, this ranks right up there with the Rosenberg Trio from Holland.”PEC - DIRTY LINEN
