This is where Malavoi, the group that revived the music scene in Martinique and, along with Kassav, became that island’s best-known musical export, began their beguine. Inspired by earlier styles, Malavoi crafted its own sophisticated, sleek, and suave sound. But barely out of school and just getting underway, this first iteration of the band plays something rougher and rootsier. And therein lies the charm. Malavoi might have become more focused and accomplished in the decades that followed, but it was never perhaps quite as fresh and enthusiastic. This is a significant release, not just for the group’s catalog, but also for Caribbean and world music.
