« The greatest county and Western performer who ever lived » par Dirty Linen

Presumably few readers need to be told that Hank Williams was the greatest county and Western performer who ever lived. Williams was master of every genre, from tearjerkers like “Cold, Cold Heart” or humorous pieces of every type (“Move It in Over”, “Fly Trouble”) to gospel (“I saw the Light”) to classic honky-tonk (“Hey, Good Lookin’”). He didn’t have great vocal ability from a technical standpoint, but no one was ever more expressive. This two-CD set gathers 36 great songs, including those named above, for a peculiar cross-section that generally but not consistently avoids the big hits. Sound is excellent, and the notes do a good job of delineating Williams’ sad story. Diehards will eventually want a full-length bio and the complete recordings, but for listeners who want a sampling that includes some of the master’s less-celebrated creations, this set will be sure to please.
