(…) For me, the wonder that was Garner deserves better attention, and an excellent place to start is Fremeaux’s The Quintessence compilation of his work from 1948-62.
Its vintage treats range from cooking versions of standards with his trio, such as “Caravan”, the romantic debut recording of his evergreen original “Misty”, his wry self-portrait “Afternoon of an elf”, and such extended solo escapades as “You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To”, with its typically gleeful, free-form introduction, pulsating theme and rhapsodic climax.
